[IMG] I can't believe no one posted this yet! Have you read about the NASA mission to intercept and strike a comet with scientific instruments on board? If not, read it here:

Ha ha ha! This should be in Whatnots. Great picture though. I hope crashing the very expensive probe was worth it.

I'm with you Bel...this seems to me to be a story of enormous importance. The technology to be able to navigate and crash the probe onto a comet the size of Manhattan seems to bode well for our chances if a comet were ever on collision course with Earth...that probe could have just as easily been a multi-megaton warhead.

I hadn't even heard of the story until I read it in a side bar in yesterdays newspaper.

Funny how these things work out.

Since this is in the Alley, I can also remind everyone that the guidance systems that enabled this experiment to take place owe their beginings to Ronald Reagan's much maligned "Star Wars" missile defense program.

And who says he's not a Great American? ;)

My theory is that it was actuaclly an attempt to change its path otherwise it would have shot round the sun and hit us. And we'd all get very upset if that happned wouldnt we?

They might have said that to get the funding. "Look, if you don't give us the money, the comet hits us and we all die like the dinosaurs."

But really I don't think that's the motivation. Otherwise we would have heard about a comet on a crash course months and months ago. They really just wanted to study its materials and composition.
