Thanks to the response of the previous thread I decided that an inkjet printer will be the most appropriate for my needs. Now I would like some feedback about which printers are the best according to your experiences.

My needs are a colour inkjet printer that will be used for a lot of images. I know that kodak has a pigmented ink but I'm wondering if any of the other printers offer pigmented or colourfast ink. Cost is also very important. I'm looking for something affordable. Under $150 Canadian preferably.

HP are always good. They will send you regular software updates and stuff.
I've used a Kodak printer that you can dock your camera on and they're quite good. The only problem with them is that they update their products so often that you can find your stuff is outdated pretty quickly.

My mum has a Lexmark inkjet and she tends to get a lot of paper jams, plus the ink for them can be massively expensive

Canon PIXMA printers have consistently been rated highly by PC Magazine. The MP610 has an Editor's Choice rating and is around your price range.

Here are some HP Editor's Choices around your price range.

Oh, and I think any "photo" printer these day has colorfast ink.

I've always used Epson inkjets and I've been relatively happy with them. Pretty much all of the print quality problems were due to using non-Epson cartridges (practically no problems since switching to Epson's own) and there weren't many other problems with them.

Most printers use dyes, although some use real inks. The dyes are not colorfast but soluble in water, but generally inks are.

I found a few links for you, but this one explains it really well:

Lots of good advice here, thanks to all. I am still interested in pigmented ink and when checking a lot of these products they don't say if they use it so I'm assuming that they probably don't. According to the link Chandos provided pigment ink is still progressing in the printer industry. I will have to investigate further.

Thanks for the link Chandos. It does well explain the difference between pigments and dyes. I studied fine art in college for 2 years and worked a whole bunch of years afterwards in an art supply store so I was familiar with that information. A lot of people don't know the difference however so it is very valuable information to know if you want your colours to last.

If you want pigment-based inks, EPSON has had DURABrite inks for a while now (my last printer had DURABrite ink before it clogged permanently).

Here is a list of EPSON printers compatible with DURABrite Ultra inks.

Though many dye-based ink technologies claim ~100 years durability now.

Go with Canon printers. Every time PC Worl, PC Magazine, or MaximumPC write reviews on printers, Canon is at, or near the very top.

HP *used* to make good printers, I'm dissapointed with my HP 6210 AIO. :bad:

Canon and Epson make the best printers IMO. I've used HP for over 10 years and they've always been very problematic (not to mention their ink cartridges used to be more expensive than, say, Canon's). I don't know much about the pigment-based inks, but if BTA says they're good, and if they're better than what Canon has, you might want to go with Epson. Whichever brand you choose, just make sure you stick with it - if you get a Canon printer, use only Canon ink, etc. You're much more likely to avoid potential problems.
