Anybody else spend hours and hours in the early 90's playing this wonderful game?

I have it somewhere - am yet to get it to run. Probably should, but as I remember it was being extremely difficult...

The memories... had this aaaaages ago, and I don't think I ever replayed. I remember having very mixed feelings about it. It was a fantastic concept buried in an intimidating interface, and the lurning curve was quite steep. It would have still worked, I think, if it wasn't for the bugs. I think I had one of the earlier versions, and I never managed a one-hour play session without a total system crash.

    from wiki:
Darklands is a role-playing game produced by MicroProse. Released in 1992 for the PC/DOS platform, Darklands is set in the Holy Roman Empire (roughly medieval Germany) during the 15th century. While the geographic setting of the game is historically accurate, the game also includes many supernatural elements. As the manual states, "whatever people of the era imagined was possible, now really is possible...

Darklands was awesome. I still have all the 5.25 inch disks that it came on, lovingly tucked away in the original box. There are times that I've thought about loading DOS onto one of my old computers just so I can play it. But I don't know if it will work with a newer sound card. Old DOS games almost always had sound card issues. Remember the days of trying to find the right IRQ setting for sound? There was a great crop of games that Microprose came out with in just a few years in the early 1990s: Darklands, Master of Magic, X-Com, to name just a few....

Come to think of it, ISTR d/ling that from some abandonware site or other. Don't recall actually playing it, though.

Works nicely in Dosbox, sound and all. I bring it out and play it every once in a while, and have done for a decade or so.

Never get to the dragonkilling business, though. I get distracted eradicating raubritters and making a fool of myself at the witches' sabbat. And rotting in prison, from time to time.

The farthest I've gotten is knee deep into the Templar's fortress. The game gets pretty fun there. I always get distracted by something new and shiny and come back after a long time.
