    Anyone can do anything (well, with certain exceptions) with any intellectual property once its copyright expires (less than 100 years), and Dante's has centuries ago (long before there even was a concept of copyright). For example, the copyright on much of Lovecraft's Cthulhu has expired a few months back in the US; in Europe, everything that Lovecraft published during his lifetime has been in the public domain as of this year and now (some limitations aside) anyone can do pretty much anything they want with the themes and characters from those books. Develop computer/console games based on it, write new books, create board games, etc.

    Now that I think about it, the game might be influenced by Devil May Cry. As you (may) know, that game is full of allusions to Dante's Inferno - the main character is called Dante; his brother is Vergil, they fight all sorts of monsters in Hell...

    But, you know, that's actually a good game that makes intelligent references, not a hunk of crap produced by EA...
