[IMG] To be frank, if it weren't for Baldur's Gate I would not even know anything about D & D. I'm not a fantasy fan, most concepts in the book I see are rather cliched and lacking in originality. Most things, from the over-abundance of magic and over-involvement of deities, the typical blonde, blue eyed look in shiny armour, etc. Lacks none of that real world grittiness that makes you take it a bit more seriously.

I find it hard to find D & D artwork that I can really identify with. For example, most of the portraits in BG1 sucked, except for the Ranger, Minsc and Khalid. Icewind Dale portraits were better (and the female portraits were very steamy too!), but still seemed cliched. BG2 portraits are a little better, but offer little choice as well. Even though they tried to make things grittier, as opposed to the clean, fresh faced look, it wasn't gritty enough for me. Also, when I tried to get outsider created portraits for my characters, I find that the quality usually sucked.

The Planescape portraits were actually quite good in portraying the characters. Their portrayals of Dak'kon, the Abishai, Cornugons, Glabrezu, etc were so good that they leave the impression of what the creatures should look like! Planescape art has a high standing in my books.

Another good artist is Tony Diterlizzi! The guy is good! Check his works out!

Do you know of any good D & D artists? Provide a link so we can check it out!

[IMG] Yikes! There's a TON of originality in the Fanstasy genre (even more in SF), but I suppose that's not what this topic is about...

Well, I don't know ANY artists that draw ONLY for D&D (they'd starve), but Sam Wood and Todd Lockwood did most of the work for the 3rd edition moster(ous) manual.

If you want better portraits, there are many places you can download from. Can't remember any off the top of my head though.
