I'm sure the custom agents didn't want to be accused of profiling.

And if he would have been detained only to discover bovine blood on the chainsaw? How would the arguements be going?

Well, they would have to let him go with an apology and compensation.

A degree of suspicion is absolutely justified, as you usually don't kill or cut up bovines with a chainsaw. It is an unusual tool for a butcher or hunter, as far as 'bloody work' is concerned. Same goes for swords.

Considering the risk of having the type of murderer using chainsaws running around, that IMO justifies a few curious questions and perhaps a brief detention, say, for up to 48 hours, if there isn't a good explanation.

...so we can stick people for umpteen weeks in Gitmo with no trial, but we can't detain someone at a border crossing for a few days?

I guess the silver lining is that we don't have much to worry about from big brother yet. It's just them durned foreigners who get screwed.

When something like this is read one can't help but form his\her own mental picture of what the person must look like. Well, you can see him here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4072746.stm
looks pretty close to what id consider a bloody chainsaw sporting lunatic...

Well, they weren't very bright anyway, because the suspect told the agents that he was a trained snipper with 700 kills. Just how do you profile someone like that anyway? A Mafia hitman? But the agents did have fun playing with the guy's swords according to one witness. Wow, I sure feel safer with those guys on the job.

Yet another example of the fact that common sense . . . . . is not that common!
