Is there anything I need to know before I run this baby? I've read previous posts, so I won't be running BG2 at the same time (wtf would you do that?). There's not much to the readme, except what version it is and a thanks section. I can't make heads nor tails of DLTCEP for making items - yes, I followed Rastor's tutorial! :p - so this is my next shot.

Well, I had some problems with it, but once you get it to work, it's quite simple. It also tells you about all effects and such.
The problem is, I've only managed to get it to run once or twice, all other times it just tells me that there's error.

I figure, "Oh wth, let's run it while I wait for replies." Here's what I got the first time running the application (looks like a book?):
Which leads me to more questions. What do I need to run Cromwell? Is clicking on that gold book icon what I'm supposed to do? (It's the only thing in the folder that's remotely executeable.)

Just download and install the TeamBG VB 6 runtimes package from SP's IE Modding subsection; it should have all the necessary ocx and dll files. And if you were downloading the Smithy from SP (same section), you'd see the warning that that package is required to run it...

I didn't get it from SP, but BWL because I was finding info about it. :o I feel like such a traitor now.

Is the VB pack supposed to overwrite files in my WINSYS folder?

You can let it if the files are newer than the ones you have there, or just skip the files you already have; they should work fine.

(Here is where you gang up on me for being computer stupid)

Why is VB doing that? Am I wrong in thinking this is for BG2 only?

Doing what? Those VB runtimes are something most (if not all) programs written in VB need to run. You'll only need to install them once.

Why is VB putting files in my WINSYS folder? Since it's for a mod to change BG2, shouldn't it be putting whatever it's putting in in the BG2 folder? It's mute now, as I can't get Smithy to work anyway. *shrug*

    Uh...

You need to install the VB runtimes so that programs written in VB (the Smithy, for example) can run, since they need those files to operate. The VB runtimes have nothing to do with any specific game, but with the programs used to modify the games. Most older and TeamBG-made editors were written in VB and need those runtimes installed in order to run. So the files are put in a separate directory, since all kinds of programs need them.

I recently got the smithy program and haven't quite been able to figure it out. I fixed the .dll problem and went through several walkthroughs (including the robe of vecna) in a previous thread. Whenever i try the CLUAConsole cheat for the item, the game just crashes. If I try to add the item by use of ShadowKeeper, BG2 crashes upon loading or ShadowKeeper will tell me item does not exist. The items are in my override file. I got frustrated and just took the robe of vecna(wa2robe) and saved as (robeofvecna) to see if it would work and it still crashed. Any help would be appreciated.

Name's too long. "robeofvecna" is 11 characters; I think the limit is 7 or 8.

Wow, do I feel like a *insert random statement here*. I do believe that was listed in the ReadMe. Thanks for fixing that one for me. Ok, here's another for any of you. Is it possible to make an item that gives you spells to your spellbook. Here's an example of what I want: Helm of Divination; grants the user access to True sight, detect invisiblity, etc. (to the spellbook, as if I learned the scroll. So I could use memorize these spells and use in a sequencer or the like)

Well, my first instinct was to say, "No, of course not", but thinking about it, it'd actually be fairly easy. Each spell scroll has two activatable 'abilities': the first is the casting of the spell from a quickslot, the second is the learning of the spell. (Though how they manage to make it accessible through the inventory I haven't a clue.) If you could copy the effect of the second manually and tweak a little, you could very well have an item that gave you access to spells while wearing. All you need to know is the names of the spell scrolls, or if you can dissect the workings of the effect you could just duplicate it from any scroll and change the spell reference.

EDIT: The only sticking point I can see would be what happens to the scroll when you learn the spell. :mommy: You'd have to do some testing to see if that transfers over with the effect, or if it's just part of the inventory interface activation.

Time for question number three on the Smithy. After making a few items now, I noticed I don't know how or where the spell reference numbers or other reference numbers are coming from. I have been just loading items with mods I like and copying that part. Does anybody know of a list of spell/abilities and the number to go with them?

Infinity Explorer will let you see all of them. It's a very handy resource.

    P.S. How'd the Helm go?

I changed my mind and went straight for the prize. I made the Hand and Eye of Vecna. :) They go along with that improved Robe of Vecna from the previous post. Don't worry, they're not "that" overpowered. I'm still working out a few of the spells to give the hand though. In order to put spells in the spellbook you use Spell: Learn Spell[147].
