[IMG] The lame manual "explains" crits then talks about increased threat without stating what the threat means! Of course the extra damage is easy to understand, but what is the threat business? Does anyone familiar with 3E rules know the answer?

    Thanks in advance.

Every weapon has a "threat range". For example, a normal longsword has a threat range of 19-20.

What this means is if on your modified to-hit roll, you get a 19 or 20, you have a chance to score a critical hit. You roll again, and if you score a hit (your modified roll is greater than your enemy's AC) you score a critical and your damage is multiplied according to your weapon's critical multiplier. If you don't score a hit on this second roll, the attack is not a critical hit, and you get the normal damage.

If I understand correctly, "crit" = critical hit and "threat" = the range of numbers on a d20 that leads to a "crit".

Well a threat occurs when you roll in the threat range of your weapon. The threat becomes a crit when the second roll also hits the enemy.

Thanks for that, it is so clear now. Why do they "explain" things in the manual...

    Me saying whinge, whinge, whinge...

I'm sure you realize that the net result is that you get much less critical hits in 3E than you got in 2E.. Lame..

I would have to say the truth of that statement depends on several things: PC class, PC level, PC STR or PC DEX, weapon type, and monster AC.
