Does Critical hits (roll of 20) and Critical need roll of damage? Or Critical hits always do maximum? Or maximum x 2?

What are penalties for Critical misses (roll of 1)? What is difference between simple miss and Critical one?

A critical miss means that there is a probability that weapon you use actually break. This doesn't happen to magical weapons though, which explains why you probably haven't noticed it. A roll of 1 also means miss regardless of THACO.

I knew that 1 rolled is always a miss
Didnt know that weapon could broke.
    Thanks.

What about Critical hits? How is the damage of the critical hit calculated?

I believe critical hits double the damage rolled for that hit.

IIRC there is still a damage roll. Blackthorne is correct, this roll is then doubled for a critical hit.

If the only penalty for critical miss is the possibility for non-magical weapons to break i have to say that as 99% of players use magical items, critical miss absolutely doesnt differ from ordinary miss.

Are there really no other penalties? I mean maybe if a miss is critical, character must loose his next attack or something...

Why do characters hassle so intensively when they made a critical miss? They actually shouldnt if there is no difference between critical and ardinary miss...

A critical hit doubles the die and strength damage from the weapon, and nothing else.

So if you have a +3 longsword and a strength of 18/00 (since this increadibly rare strength is possessed by all warriors) you would normally deal 1d8+6(str)+3(mag) damage. On a critical hit you would deal 2d8(double sword damage)+12(double str damage)+3(mag). Specialization bonuses are counted in with your strength and therefore doubled as well. So if your warrior had 2 slots in longsword his str bonus would become +8 and +16 on a critical.

I don't know how all the damage is calculated.
    I mean:
    Keldorn used Carsomyr = 1d12 +5
And he had 19 strength, due to that belt +7
Now, how on earth can you get a hit of 40, without critical hit, and with critical hit, I got 60 or something. Maximum what I should be giving ougth to be: 12 + 5 + 7 = 26, ???????!!!!!!!
    How is this all calculated?!

With a critical miss, I though you couldn't make the next attack either. People always look a little dazed if they had a critical miss.
BTW. Minsc had some pretty nasty XP with crit. miss. I had 4 two handed swords when I left the dungeon, but after two days, I only had one. So I went to the graveyard, killing those irritating skeleton warriors. Hmmmm, magical things rule...!

Very interesting. I read a post months ago from one of the game designers (Bioware's site) that specifically mentioned that Critical hits and BackStab mulitplier damage is from the weapon ONLY. They do not give Stregth modifiers while factoring the initial weapon double damage for a Critical hit or the initial backstab multiplier. Also mentioned at the time is that Critical hits do not give maximum damage. I also recall that there is a readme file in the BG2 directory that gives instruction how to edit the BG2 config file so you can view ALL of the modifiers that you can possibly get.

I suppose that's the only way to verify what is really calculated when dealing Critical Hits and successful Backstabs.

For instance, a 1d8 Scimitar would do 2d8 on a critical hit and a 1d8 Scimitar would give a maximum of X5 damage by the weapon only for a high level Thief upon a successful backstab. Your Strength damage would be added afterwards simply because a Critical hit doesn't "jump" your Strength from 18/00 +6 damage to a 24 STR +12 damage.

So it becomes 1d8 +6damage for an 18/00 STR to a 2d8 +6 damage upon a Critical hit. Likewise it's a 1d8 X5 damage for a successful backstab then the additional STR damage.

I'll search that readme file for the edit info.

Aha!... found it. It's in the "Power Users.txt" file.

    Here's what is state's:

    Extra Combat info:

    Found in [Game Options]:

    Extra Combat Info=1

When activated, displays all hit roll and damage roll
    calculations in detail.

I should've visited this file before! It actually has info to disable all of those movie scenes as well. Granted the scenes are very well done but I've seen them... time and time and time again already! :) Enough!

No! The critical miss does matter! you get a time penalty (you just skip the next hit)
