    [IMG] Hy guys

I have just bought IWD and it seems really great!

I have just 1 question for now: I'd like to know what is the right party for this game. Should I concentrate on combat (fighters, rangers, ...) or on magic. Or both?
And is there any real difference among the races (humans, elves, ...)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

    Bye, CarloGol

You can create an entire party of up to 6 characters, I've always thought a balanced magic/fighting party is good. Some go for starting every as fighters, for a couple of levels, then dualing to other things...It's a preference thing.

The party I ran through IWD was this:
    Human Paladin
    Dwarf Fighter (straight)
    1/2 Elf Cleric
    Halfing Fighter/Thief
    Human Conjurer
    Elf Fighter/Mage

If I could do it over (which I probably will) I'm going to change it up a bit, maybe adding a Ranger or Ranger/Cleric mix...PLus I've never played a bard or druid before...So I may try that too.

The best way to go is to pick characters you think might be fun. I think the only essential charater is a thief though...There are a lot of traps and opportunities for a thief to excel in his/her trade.

    Thanks Sir.

    I will take your advice!

BTW, I read that some patches to IWD have been released. Are they necessary to play? I have the Italian version of the game, and I noticed that there are patches for UK which should *NOT* be installed for non-UK versions.

There is a patch out...But make sure it's the most updated one. The first patch that came out actually made it worse!

I found the newest patch link on this site...Just click search, and use "patch" as the keyword. If you can't find it, let me know, I could email it to you.

    You should have:
At least one cleric (either a Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric or Druid/Fighter, a straight Druid, or straight Cleric) for healing, defensive spells, and backup front-line fighter.
A spellcaster (specialist Mage for extra spells per level or, in a pinch, a Bard will do) for offensive spells and the operation of some important magic items.
A Thief for trap detecting and scouting (should be multiclassed or dual, like Halfling Fighter/Thief, Gnome Illusionist/Thief, or Human Thief-dual-Whatever - straight thieves lose their real value after reaching mid-high levels)
The rest of your party should be a mix of Fighters and/or Rangers and/or Paladins. And I always try to include a Bard, for several reasons:
    1) They can Identify most anything, which comes in very, very handy and frees up your Mage's spell slots for Magic Missile.
    2) They can wear decent armor, use just about any weapon, and cast Mage spells (and when you get Elven Chainmail in the Severed Hand, he can be armored and cast spells at the same time).
    3) Using the Thief experience-level table, they advance rather quickly, allowing them to often cast high-level mage spells sooner than a straight mage.
    4) The Bard Song serves as a nice Bless-type effect that you can instigate anytime and anywhere.
    Bards are pretty cool.

Yeah, do what ever you think would be the most fun. I've been running a whole bunch of different types of parties with my friends. Actually, lately I've been running parties as small as 3 (one guy for each human player). I don't know if it's stupid, but you sure gain experience a lot faster and it's a lot more challenging.
I suggest one or two fighters, a theif, straight mage, and at least one ranger.. the rest is all a matter of preference.
P.S. Thanks for the advice on the straight thief thing. My guy is already at 100% in everything. Maybe next time I'll try a multiclass. Can a Mage/Theif use the backstab ability with a dagger and still be able to cast spells if he/she isn't wearing any armor?

[IMG] I think most if not all armor does not alow a mage to cast spells. unless you multi or duel class to a fighter/mage to be able to wear the elven chainmail.

[IMG] No doubt the best party is:

    3 fighters
    1 Mage
    1 Cleric
    1 Mage/thief

It's not the most fun I'll tell you, but effective!!!

    [IMG] I beat the game with a the following party;

    Paladin (Human)
    Fighter (Elf)
    Bard (Half Elf)
    Druid (Half Elf)
    Cleric (Dwarf)
    Illusionist/Thief (Gnome)

A little harder than Nightal's party but lot's more fun.

I've beaten the game a few times and the party that was the most fun was four GNOMES:

    Fighter
    Fighter/Thief
    Fighter/Cleric
    Fighter/Illusionist

Fewer characters, so each got more per kill but with all the multi-classes it sort of evened out the difficulty. Everbody could wear helmets, and armor at times.

    I have gone with

    2 Fighters
    2 Mages
    1 Theif
    1 Cleric

    All straight classes.

    **NOTE**

I haven't bought IWD yet and this is the demo, so I dunno what this will perform like later in the game this party (level 3) is good.

i personally prefer dwarves.the have great saving throws and they have a very high constitution.so my party was:

    2fighters(dwarf)
    2fighter/cleric(dwarf)
    1mage/thief(elf)
    1mage(elf)

do not forget that your leader is the only one who needs charism.

but beware, this party is actually too strong.it felt kike cheating.

[IMG] With this party, the game should be a breeze for anyone:

    Paladin (human)
    Fighter/Cleric (dwarf)
    Fighter/Druid (half-elf)
    Mage [Conjurer] (half-elf)
    Thief (half-elf)
    Ranger (elf)

See them wreak havoc at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/IWD/Screenshots

Combined, they are a perfect party lacking nothing.
