I've noticed that every now and then, when a monster is stunned or asleep I get a coup de grace (instant kill).

Does anyone know the real rules behind this wonderful instant killing gift? I want to be able to maximize / exploit it ... *evilgrin*

Very paladin-y of me, don't ya think?

    :good:

You get a coup de grace when your opponent is completely helpless: bound, held, sleeping, paralyzed, unconscious or otherwise unable to defend themselves. Works with a melee weapon or, if your character is directly adjacent to them, with a bow or crossbow. A critical hit is scored automatically. If they survive that, they still must make a Fortitude save or die. Rogues also get their sneak attack damage, just in case they need it :p And any creatures immune to critical hits are also immune to this.

iirc, in 3rd ed. at least, the fort. save DC is equal to the damage dealt, so its pretty hard to not die when it happens. Also, it won't work on held creatures, they have to be really helpless and unaware of anything that's going on, i.e sleeping.

Nope, held foes are considered helpless for this rule. The exact definition is "bound, held, sleeping, paralyzed, unconscious, or otherwise at your mercy". The main downside to using a coup de grace in pnp is that it is a full round action and provokes attacks of opportunity. So its pretty silly in actual combat. You give up all your extra attacks and suffer a free attack from any nearby foes. And the fort save is DC 10+dmg, so it all but impossible to make unless you use a really low damage weapon like a dagger.

Maybe I'll carry that +3 sickle I found just for this reason.

Imagin Darken Rahl (from Wizard's First Rule) with his curved dagger drawing the bowels out of victems and reading the future in them.

(I really shouldn't be a paladin anymore, should I?????) :good:
