If you look under the spell descriptions, you will see that each spell has a counter-spell. The spell Light for example, has Darkness as it's counterspell. Cure Light Wounds has Ghoul Touch etc.
So select Counterspell, and if the mage you are fighting cast's Cure Light Wounds, you will immediately cast Ghoul Touch to cancel his spell out, but only if you have it memorized. You do this automatically, much like an Attack-of-Oppertunity.
But it's hard to counterspell, unless you know what kind of spells the enemy mage/priest has.

Yeah, I think it casts the instant the enemy caster does, so effectively totally cancels out the effects of that spell.
    Pretty simple....I uh...think?

Its somewhat useful in PnP, where you actually have the time to think about its utility in the specific situation. But in NWN you essentially have to decide before hand if you are going to try it, so you can't decide whether stopping that particular spell is more valuable than having the counterspell available for your use later.

if you are a mage you usually walk around with protection magics like crazy.( greater stoneskin, premonition, element shield, spell shield, etc)so you should nt need protection like counter spell for enemys attackes. i dont get hujrt at all cause all my protection magics. elemantal and phisical.

This is mostly the result of implementing a rule designed for PnP play. In normal PnP play, you don't walk all over the place with all those spells up because they just don't last long enough to cover you constantly. Nor can you rest for 30 seconds every 2 hours to replenish your supply of said spells.

They implemented counterspelling because its neat and could have some use in the game, but it isn't really that useful given the realities of computer play.

It could be useful in MP duels though ;) . Perhaps if you had time to think about whether using it would benefit you or not, you would know whether dispelling it is worth it.

Also, your spellcraft skill affects the chance of identifying the enemy spell and dispelling it. Also, the enemy mage will not beat you. If you identify the spell successfully, the dispell will work.
