Well, they aren't going to keep peer-to-peer downloading legal, but they have actually decided to take into consideration consumer rights and stop eating from corporate hand. Here's from the article at Yahoo:

    About copy protections:

Hurrah for the French, I guess. I hate the crappy CD & good copy protection scheme. That's criminal fraud.

Now, wonder if other governments will follow the example and grow some cojones.

Um, I do not see how this fits in:

Is there going to be protection against copying or not?
Regardless, this is a step in the right direction. Good for the French!

There isn't going to be copy protection. You're only going to pay a fine if you copy from someone else's disk -- this means friends, not likely family (they seem to believe it's okay in family), or for commercial purposes.

Yeah, good for the French. I don't know that I'd agree with copying for family members is OK, but *shrug*.

The only thing I saw in the above that I don't like is that private users will be restricted in the number of copies they can make for themselves. All that's going to lead to is more of that nonsense that Sony/BMG got in trouble for; there would have to be some way for them to keep track of how many times you copied something that would be difficult for you to circumvent...

Perhaps they mean five copies existing at the same time, not five acts of burning a CD? The latter makes as little sense to me as it does it to you.
