i haven't seen conan the barbarian in a long time but isn't there a character in there named Subatai or something like that who resembles yoshimo? Is my memory playing tricks on me?

In the books he had a thief friend, although Conan is a fighter(or barbarian)/thief character himself.

Yeah, there's an asian-looking archer/thief in the first film. Don't remember his name, but I guess thats who you mean.

Yes, Subotai was Conan's companion. Yoshimo introduces himself as "Yoshimo, thief and archer"--exactly as Subotai does in Conan.

edit--referencing the Conan movies here. I haven't read the books. :)

Though Subotai usually hit what he aimed for with most of his shots, never had that much luck with Yoshi, must be the Thief THAC0.

do you think Yoshimo was based on Subotai? or is it just the asian/thief characteristic?

I'd say probably not as the characters are fairly different, outside of being asian thieves. BG2 has a number of in-jokes and this is probably just another one. I'll admit I got a chuckle the first time I heard the line.
