Computer & TV Picture Output - Performance Hit?

    [​IMG] So, I have a new TV here and I connected it to my GeForce FX 5200 for kicks. Now I'm wondering if the dual (cloned) output I have the card set to now puts any additional strain on it. I'm only using the TV output now and then, so I don't want to leave the dual output on all the time if it'd impact performance in any way.

    So, the question is, does it?

    Since nobody has replied, I'll give you my uninformed opinion :)

    I would guess that you would not get a performace hit, but rather a power hit and more heat because you are driving two signals instead of one.

    Well, that would be my guess also, as long as the signal is straight through and not off-loaded onto the GPU. But it's only a guess.

    Thanks for the guesses, but that just adds to my own and a few others I've gathered by now. :p

    I'm still hunting for someone who can give me a definite answer... I'm really curious about this. I've searched around and couldn't find anything about this. Hmm...

    If you have a newer graphics intensive game, you could do your own test. Just like the reviewers do when they report on the frame rates certain games achieve. Run the game and see what frame rate you get. Then enable the TV output and see if the frame rate drops. If the TV conversion is done completely through hardware then there may be no performance hit. But if the GPU gets involved in any way then my guess is that there will be a hit.

    I'd say that the only thing that would be consumed more would be power...to send two sets of signals to two different monitors. 12 volts or something like that to send a signal to a monitor? Big deal for a PSU over 350 Watts.

    As for me, I like to watch the local news on my 19" monitor while surfing the web on my laptop's screen. So viewing two different things at the same time might be more intensive for your GPU. You might try to run a benchmark program while using two monitors to find out.
