I'm replaying BG for the umpteenth time, first time on my new laptop with win XP though and everything is going just fine, but for the voices. Sometimes, when the volume is extemely loud, I can hear them mutter something, but hen it just fades away. And when I'm on normal volume I don't get anything at all.

I tried changing the sound settings. Voices on max etc..didn't help. For the rest, well I'm playing in 32 bits and all I've changed in the settings are the AI checks. Upgraded from 30/sec to 35/sec.

Any clue on what's going wrong? I really miss hearing that good ol' metallic Sarevok say "You're perceptive..for an old man..."

I experienced similar in both the baldurs gate game and the DVD player on the computer, after i tried changing some sound settings for surround. setting them back (to something about 2 speakers) made it work like normal again. Probablly not same thing here.

Sounds like it's either a speaker problem or something to do with your drivers. IMHO.

Hmmm, still haven't found a solution, looks like I'll have to do without voices. :(

    Hm...headphones?
I feel your pain, I went for awhile without voices until I got new speakers.

[IMG] Is there an environmental audio setting in BG1? I had this problem with BG2 when I switched to an XP machine: its supposed to make the sound all echoey and such but it just muffles the voices to incomprehensible volumes. Can't remember if its implemented as far back as BG1, though. Go to the sound options and if there's an option that says "environmental audio" or somthing like "EAX" then disable it.

EDIT: Just dug out BG and checked. It does indeed have this setting, and it sounds to me like that's your culprit. Go to the "sound" menu in the in game options and turn environmental audio off. Assuming, of course, that you havent already...

Uytuun, Did you get your problem fixed? I had a similar problem and turned off the "environmental audio" button and the voices are 100% better. So you lose the echo's in caves at least you can hear what the characters are saying.

Yup, the EAX did it for me too, but in BGII rather than BG. In 1 I didn't even know there was the option! I used to get it real bad; all sorts of pops, cracks and whistles. But that was under Windows Me, so it's a miracle anything worked at all, really...

I'm pretty sure I suggested turning EAX off in the chatroom back then...

I had forgotten about this thread, really, but I just checked and it worked for me as well.

Thank you SP! You're the best! *warm and fuzzy feeling* :p

Aah, win 98, I do miss it sometimes.
