Who do you find guilty in the trial?

Quint is out of question. He knew more or less what was going on and he did deliver the children to his brother, but it seems he has already collected his punishment. At any rate, not so guilty as his brother.

Karlat wanted to become a lich to guard his family. So first it's undeath - and that's quite evil. Then he consorted with the daemon - for how else would you call that? He believed the children would be revived afterwards, but what a man would kill children to grow in power himself, even if they were to be revived shortly after that? Who would believe the daemon on something so stupid as this? Looks like obvious scam, so Karlat apparently didn't care about anything else than power and knowledge.

The daemon tricked Karlat into believing that killing the children was necessary and that they would be revived. However, the choice still belonged to Karlat and he did make it. The daemon was doing his "job" - after all, he was a daemon. He's one culpable bastard, but no one in his sane mind would have expected him to do otherwise - contrary to humans who are supposed to be good ar at least non-evil.

Note that the daemon himself says no one is innocent there but no one is guilty except for himself.

However, blaming Karlat and destroying the phylactery is the only way to revert his undeath. Whether you imprison the daemon and everyone else or take the phylactery with you, Karlat remains undead. If you take it, you're actually guarding a lich's phylactery and preventing an undead creature from dying. Is that really a good deed?

Imprisoning the daemon sounds like a good idea, but then the village doesn't go free. The villagers are hung in time even though they have done nothing wrong.

So, which one do you choose (assuming you believe it's the right thing to do)?

Actually Quint had very little idea what was going on, so I always find him innocent. I usually find Karlat guilty, I have never actually been able to summon the demon, but if I did, I wouldn't trust it anyway.
