[IMG] :help: This may sound strange to some of you, but for one of my graduate courses I am doing a project involving "ethnic jokes." Basically, what I need from all of you is your favorite (or least favorite) ethnic jokes.

Please Please Please - do not post these on this post :nono: - send them to me as a PM or even email them to me. Just try not to post them here and somehow make me responsible for an "ethnic cleansing" post that gets half of the members here pissed off at the other half -- so again, PM your jokes to me or email them. (questions as to the nature of this project are welcome, as well). :coffee:

What's the definition of "ethnic?" Is it racial/national origin only, or do religions count as well? What about old-people jokes? What about blonde jokes?

"Ethnic" implies race or nationality. "Blonde jokes" and "little old lady/man jokes" would not work here - although religious jokes might.

This is a multicultural literature class - the "trickster figure" specifically - and we are going to discuss ethnic jokes and "tricksterism" - kinda weird and complicated, but really really interesting.

Basically, the "trickster figure" in literature is a figure that performs some sort of social commentary, usually through jokes or some sort of trickery. The trickster attempts to show people in their society just exactly what is wrong with that society by bringing "the dark side" of people's lives out to the foreground. In doing this, he is attempting to promote action and honesty with the end result of a culture that does not have a "dark underbelly" - be it the dark side of politics, race relations, religion, or anything else that is central to culture.

Anyways, we are going to look at ethnic jokes as one form of tricksterism - as social commentary.

The trickster figure is essential to Native American Literature, Jewish Literature, African and African-American Literature, Ancient Greek Mythology (Greek, but not the Romanized form of the myths), and other various cultures.
