I'm thinking of having a new PC built by a company recommended to me Mesh Computers. Here is the basic spec for £799.

    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 5200+ AM2 Processor with HyperTransport™ Technology
ASUS nForce 590 SLI Deluxe PCIe Mainboard
    1024MB DDR2 533Mhz Memory
    320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
    256MB GeForce 7600GT SLI Ready
Sony 18x Super Format DVD Writer
    7.1 Channel Surround Sound Audio
10 USB, 2x Firewire, WiFi, 2x GB LAN
Classic Warranty-3Years free parts & lab.

Now the changes I'm going to propose are 512NB graphics card, 2GB memory, a second hard drive and a second DVD drive.

    Comments? Suggestions?

    Thanx
    DS

I think some people have had issues with SONY products, but other than that it sounds like a dream to me. I really want a new PC, but the cash isn't there right now.

Do you knoq roughly how much all of that will cost? I'm currently trying to decide on a new gaming rig and it's too damn confusing!

@duffin when I get a quote I'll let you know, the second drives can wait and I can install them myself. But I'm guessing somewhere around £900-950 with the extra memory and upgraded graphics card.

For the AMD AM2 processors, the faster DDR2 RAM makes a significant difference in throughput unlike for the Core 2 Duo. Get the fastest DDR2 RAM you can afford.

Again, based on other comments on these boards, why would anyone NOT go for a Core 2 Duo? They seem to be miles better than anything else.

Some people like certain companies, especially if they've had good luck with them in the past.

But even the best companies bring out good and bad stuff. I reckon you should go with whatever is the best price v performance available at the time - and everything single thing I have ever read on the subject has said that Core 2 Duo is where it is at at the moment, by some distance.

While Core 2 Duo certainly has more power, there's the "why change what's working" angle for some people.

Right now I'd fully recommend a E6600 from a price/performance ratio viewpoint, though.

And then again, boycotting dens of evil like Sony is a whole different thing. They seem to put a lot of effort to screwing over customers for no real reason.
