[IMG] Is anyone else a little disappointed that the two "ammo-less" bows are both SHORT bows? My 3(! Me Minsc and Valygar) rangers would never stoop to using a SHORT bow! :D Right now I've got Yoshi using the one you can buy...

The other question deals with protection from normal missiles...

I remember in BG1 magic arrows (+1 etc.) would penetrate this protection, but I tried that with Firkraag's mage lackey, and it didn't seem to work...

With the normal arrows, I get the "no effect" warning, but with the +1 arrows, I hit him but no damage!

And it wasn't stoneskin or anything like that because I turned him into a veritable pincushion with 4 people firing +1 arrows at him!

After I reloaded and took him on with 3 guys with magic melee weapons, he dropped like a poleaxed ox...

So is protection from normal missiles different in BG2 or was it just this one guy?

That's a good question... I don't know his armor class or + vs missiles or missile damage resistance, that's why I was asking the question.

All I know was that in the battle text it would say that I hit him, but no damage would be taken, and his spells wouldn't be interrupted...

Well think about it... I bet you have a +1 bow, and +1 arrows is he has anywhere from +4 and up vs missles, you will not hit him. I bet had you had +2 arrows you woulda hurt him.

No, no, no... As I said, the battle text said I hit him; just no damage. I got the "no effect" warning for normal arrows; no such warning with +1 arrows, so I don't believe he needed special weapons to hit him. I saw in the battle text that he had cast "protection from normal missiles" on himself so I switched to +1 arrows. My archer had a -5 THAC0 with the bow he had at the time...

I guess I was most interested in someone saying "No, I've penetrated protection with normal missiles with magic arrows, so it must've been that guy or something else" or "Yeah, it looks like protection from normal missiles protects him from any arrows"; but I guess I can experiment myself...

OK! For anyone who's interested, it seems to me that protection from normal missiles has a bug... I experimented with my own party (Minsc graciously consented to have some arrows shot at him after having Aerie cast protection from normal missiles on him) and here's what I discovered:

Normal and +1 arrows: Battle text says hit; no damage.

All other special arrows that I had: Hit and damage. These included +2, piercing, biting, acid, fire, and ice arrows (and one pissed off Minsc! :) ).

So I guess arrows +1 are "normal" missiles...
