Bogus tax cuts

    This one is my favorite tax scam.

    It has been going on for years. The way it normally works is the scammers set up shop in black areas and start advertising their services. For a fee they will prepare the slavery reparation form for you. They typically only last about a week and then they flee and travel to the next group of marks.

    The fascinating part of it to me is that they consistantly use the same IRS form. The funny part is that the form is for a mutual fund to report to its shareholders the amount of undistributed income and taxes withheld on that income. There isn't anything that remotely looks like a slave reparation credit.

    The IRS goes into a tizzy when they get the forms and the computer spits out penalty notices for everyone who files it as a frivilous return. This way the marks get burned twice, once by the scammers and second by the IRS with fines and penalties.

    The thing that makes me curious about this case is was the guy running the scam or was he actually preparing returns?

    Well, if he was actually a certified accountant, I suppose he could say the fee he charged was for the return. Even if you have an accountant do your taxes for you, it is still you that is ultimately responsible that your taxes are done correctly. The thing I don't understand is that slavery has been outlawed in the U.S. for about 140 years now. I seriously doubt there are any people alive today who were slaves at some point in their lives.

    A CPA is not necessarily a tax preparer. In order to do audits for business one must be a CPA. The preparation of tax returns is a specialization. In this country it wasn't even a required course for studying accounting. Anyone may prepare tax returns and charge for it. I was an account but not a CPA and I was registered with the IRS as a tax preparer and had special training to prepare tax returns.

    You should always check the credentials of anyone whether CPA or not who claims to prepare tax returns. Many people get taken in by ill prepared tax preparers. At one time I worked for a CPA firm and prepared taxes.

    I know, isn't it sad how people keep on crying about injustices that happened long before they were born.

    We don't see that sort of scam in Canada although we have more than our fair share of other ones. The most pathetic has to be the de-taxers who, for a fee naturally, provide you with papers saying that you don't have to pay taxes because it is unconstitutional.

    hmm, maybe I should try to trace my family history back to the medieval days of serfdom and try to get the government to compensate me for that. ;)
