This one is giving me a real headache.

I have searched through past threads here, but so far have not found anything that works.

Funny thing is, I beat him before(the first time I played BG2 SoA, I got to the final Irenicus fight before realizing there were things I should have done but did not do, so I'm playing again). I just can't remember how I did it.

At this point I just want to get this part over with and move on.

    Any suggestions?

Do you mean the Shadow Dragon, or the Black Dragon in Suldansellessar?

Cause I always have to fight them differently because the Shadow Dragon kicks my ass all the time.

The easiest way to solve the problem is to accept the offer of the dragon and give all your possessions. :p
Another solution: kill the dragon. There are many threads about how to kill dragons, use the Search option of the message boards.
You can destroy the dragon in this way for example: the black dragon has relatively low Magic Resistance, so lower the MR with spells (e.g.: Lower Resistance, Pierce Shield) and use a few Fingers of Death on the the dragon. Use magical protections on your character(s). Summon creatures. It is a large clearing, so bring your weaker and/or non-protected characters to safe positions.

We could probably give you better advice if you told us who was in your party.

The cheesiest thing to do is drop all your items on the ground, and then tell the dragon you'll give him all of your items in exchange for the cup - since you have no items, he gives you the cup, and then you pick up all your items off the ground. (I've never tried this personally, but it supposedly works!)

But if you have Minsc in your party he will take Boo, and Minsc will lose his Beserker ability. The same is with Edwin, his amulet and his spells.

I haven´t really had any problems killing dragons. All you need to do is to buff up your characters with spells such as Defensive Harmony, Prayer, Haste and so on. Just read the descriptions and cast the ones with the longest duration first. Then launch a full frontal with your fighter-type characters. And cast offensive spells with the others. When someone is about to die just run around with him/her until the dragon attacks another character and cast Heal on the wounded one and he´s/she´s back in the game.

I dont see any difference between a dragon fight or any other harder fight. "Buff and Attack" is the way to go :D
Summons and such are a great addition, but the risk is that they will kill the dragon and then it wont show at "Most Powerful Creature blabla" in Information.
Which is a big deal :)
Although, you could use the summons until he´s at almost dead and then just back off with them.
Ohh, and if you´re going to use summons, summon them before casting buff spells.

I just killed the Sald. Dragon, I cast Prot from evil, prayer, (anti-fear cleric spell forgot it's name), and defensive harmony. The dragon died in 5 seconds of the beginning of the attack, (but then again all my characters are over the xp cap now :p .

My suggestion to kill him wouldn't be what was just said, but... don't use finger of death, since dragons have high saves against such things, try just casting high damage spells, like implosion and abi's-Horrid Wilting.

As I recall a time stop, followed by a few horrid wiltings and maybe a sequencer armed with magic missles (I know the missiles worked on at least one dragon). I remember this one was a pain two, but I'm pretty that's how I beat him.

That or your standard issue, summoning a load of elementals letting them take the first hits and then charging in with buffed up fighters. That usually works too.

I set every snare I could handle before he was on screen, had my thief sneak forward till he came into view then ran back. The dragon followed, stumbled into the snares, and was down to almost dead status before I'd even landed a blow on him. After that it was pretty easy.

Buffs: resist fear and improved haste are absolute musts and anything else available to you.

Summons: elementals and extra-planar summons like the Deva

then send in the summons followed by a mage to breach his protections, it also hels to have a second spell caster if the dragon reactiveates his protection just after.

then just hack and slash away.

Honestly though sometimes I think these things can be easier with a solo character (depends on which one though) then a party.

    Good tips...thanks everyone.

    In my party I have:

    Minsc, 17th level
    Aerie, 14th
    Jaheira, 13th
    Jan, 13th
    Imoen, 17th
Main character, a female fighter at 19th level

Would it be worth it to get the xp cap remover this late in the game?

It depends whether your characters have gone over the XP cap or not. If they're really several levels above it, then installing the XP cap remover will shoot them up a few levels and make this fight easier. If they haven't then it's not worth it.

I had close to the same party except I had Keldorn with The Holy Avenger.

I had Minsc, Jaheria and my barbarian slashing away while Keldorn was casting Dispell Magic, Aerie was casting Pierce Magic and Imoen struck the dragon with Finger of Death and he dropped like a rock.

You should be able to take both Shadow and Black dragon with spell-breaking magic, speeding your fighters and whacking them to death. I haven't found a crack on that tactic once.

That's true, without doing more than berserking and casting remove fear on my party, then rushing in head first while my mages cast pierce shield and pierce magic, I've manage to kill all the dragons in the game my first time through, cept for Firkragg, I had to reload my game a few times to beat him!

I cant recall having any problems actually with that dragon. I found him terribly easy actually, I'm not sure but i think i just had my fighters hit him while Aerie cast breach on him. took him donw in the first shot. Dragons are kind of overrated if you ask me. Though at Firkraag and the shadow dragon i cheese a little by buffing right in front of them, but i have never summoned anything vs. anything!

I got him pretty quickly the last (and fourth) time I tried. I cast all the protection spells I could, then did the Fire Golem/Lower Resistance/Pierce Magic/Breach spells while my fighters took him out.

Sometimes these things seem harder than they are, really.

    Thanks again
