    Hmms, good question.

    1) Are you trying to load from an "auto save" or "quick save" save game ? cos if you are, then thats likely to be your problem, ie your save game is corrupt.

    2) If not 1) then defragement your hard drive and then if you're still having problems try unloading everything under Windows except the system tray, basically, and any virus scanners you want to keep running.

That should fix your problem. But it would help if you mentioned what your operating system is, and what your system specifications are, ie computer speed, that helps a lot :)

    And the sound card is?

The game often gets slow if:
    - something of anti-virus type is running in the background while you're playing the game (so, you should disable such utils while playing the game)
    - your sound card driver is malfunctioning (simply disable hardware acceleration in dxdiag for the soundcard)

Does it still crash? If yes, please update your graphics card driver.

Have you tried with disabling sound hardware acceleration?

If yes, and that didn't help, run BGconfig.exe and in there disable 3d support.
