[IMG] hey, im sure this is common knowledge for everyone but my computer-illiterate self but what do BG and BG2 have in common that are different from IWD2 in terms of gmae engines or something similar? Bec. my BG and BG2 keep restarting (its a glitch) every few seconds/minutes and i'm able to play my IWD2. I jsut wanted some clarification here because as far as i can tell, the IWd2 and BG2 engines look similar so i have no idea why the IWD2 works and the BG games dont..

BG, BG2, and IWD all use the Infinity Engine. I never bought IWD2, so I couldn't tell you what engine it uses.

Yes, IWD2 is also Infinity Engine based, although some parts of it were refreshed/upgraded (note that you don't have to go through the "graphics verification" process, etc.)

Sorry, I don't know what would be killing your BG installs. Have you tried a complete reinstall (including deleting the contents of your BG1/BG2 folders? You can preserve the save game directories, but kill everything else.)

Are you using WinXP or DirextX9? Since the BGs were out before XP, it could be they don't work very well under some systems running that OS.

Have you tried installing the games on another system and seeing if they run?

EDIT: if you are running XP, try messing around with the compatibility mode, it might work. And (of course) make sure you have the latest patches installed.
One last thing if nothing else works. BG1 has a DirectX 7 (I think) patch that was released later on, see if it has any effect.

The restarting-under-XP bug is somewhat common. I think you can find a fix for this here:
    http://forums.bioware.com/viewforum.html?forum=10

I doubt it's the game-engine's fault. It's probably a compatibility issue, an incorrect installation, the wrong patch, or software running in the background while the game is on (Such as Messenger, or anti-virus). Try turning off programs running in the background; make sure you have the final patch from Bioware; and make sure you've updated DirectX.

On my last computer (win95, 333mhz, no graphics card) I had the same problem as you are talking about. To fix the problem I had to do a full install with all the bells and whistles set to bare minimum. Problem was solved.

(I can't remember how much a full install takes up but there wasn't much room left on my 20gb hard drive afterwards (Thank God we replaced the 4gb hard drive before I got the game))
