BG games screwing up my Windows installation

I recently got a new computer with Windox XP home and have tried installing vanilla BG1 and BG2 on it, no mods. The games play just fine, though both games have these weird, long pauses intermittently.

What's worse is that after running either game once, my computer minimizes all Web browser and folder windows so I can't actually see them. (They're in my Windows taskbar at the bottom of the page and they still work...I just can't actually see what's in the folder or browser because the view is permanently minimized.) I'm only able to see Sorcerer's because I reinstalled Windows.

Has anyone heard of this problem? Any suggestions? If I can't figure out a fix, I may have to put a forcible end to my BG playing. Thanks.

I have XP home, and have had no problems, other than the occasional problem with severe framerate slowdown when fighting Fire Giants (seems to be more of a problem with Tactics installed - probably an engine issue). What are your system specs? (CPU, graphics card, memory, etc.)? Do you have problems with any other programs, games, etc.?

Note - don't be surprised if this gets moved to Techno-Magic (then again, it might not).

It's an OEM computer from ABS.

    Windows XP Home ver 2002 / SP2
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    2.01 GHz processor
    512MB RAM
    GeForce 6150 graphics

I used to use another XP Home box to play BG2 on, and it worked just fine. Other than the crazy pauses I mentioned, BG2 works OK on this computer as well...but after I close out of it, I can never view another Web page or folder again; that's why I had to reinstall Windows just to make this post.

    Any suggestions?
