    *POSSIBLE SPOILERS!*

Maybe considered a daft question as it depends almost wholly on your style of play, but... In your opinion, what is the most balanced and powerful party combination?

    I found:

PC (a dual Katana wielding fighter)
    Keldorn (with Carsomyr)
Jahiera (with Scimitar + Shield... later Dual Scimitar AND a sling for occasional use :p )
Yoshimo/Imoen (With Tansherons bow and later Gesens)
Edwin (with Boomerang dagger and kick ass spells :p )
Viconia (with Dragonbone (?) +4 sling)

I got on very well with this party as nearly all your needs are met brilliantly (though thief skills are lacking once Yoshimo traitors).

Are there much better combinations that meet all Wizard, Cleric, Thief, Fighter needs?.

    Thanks!

Well, I'm sure the "best" party involves custom-made characters and dual-classed Kensais.

O.K then. I like to have:

PC - either a Sorcerer or cleric/mage multiclass

    Korgan - duel wielding axes

Keldorn - Using the Holy Avenger

Minsc - Two handed swords and bows

Jan - Crossbow and short sword

I've been a bit of a "all-created" advocate lately, but my last NPC-laden party consisted of:

Me: Sorcerer (Firetooth +4, Staff o' the Magi)

    Keldorn (guess?)

Valygar (dualing Celestial Fury and Malakar, gave him hammer proficency later for Crom)

Jahiera (staffs, dual wielding Scimitars for fun)

Jan (crossbows, short swords, handles all the spells my PC can't; all the thief you need).

For the last one I alternated between Vikki and Minsc, but was crazy about neither. This party pretty much covers all the bases, and throws in the best romance to boot. I never really liked Nalia, Haer, Edwin, or Cernd, so I never use them. Jan kicks ass - my only complaints about him are his alignment (he seems more chaotic good than chaotic neutral to me) and his INT. It's a waste being a gnomish spellcaster if you don't take advantage of the 19 INT score.

Subra, regarding your first choice (clerice/ranger), is it dual- or multi-classed? If dual, I started a thread here that I would apprecaite receiving some more input on.

    Difficulty: Insane

    PC: Sorcerer
    (For summoning/time stop/carnage spree)

    #1 NPC: Imoen
(Yoshimo until I manage to save her. Also, I have taken the liberty to re-allocate her thief points, since she is from BG1, as well as Jaheira and Minsc)

    #2 NPC: Jaheira
(Solely because of her Iron Skin -spell, invaluable when the monsters do double damage. 2 mountains bears -summon- is also a nice bonus)

    #3 NPC: Minsc
(Lotsa damage with a flail and warhammer. Racial enemy helps.)

    #4 NPC: Aerie
(Summonings, like skeleton warriors, and healing. Also, she can use bucklers -like Shield of Harmony)

    #5 NPC: Viconia
(Again for summonings and healing. That Mace of Distruption comes handy for her when combined with Protection from undead)

    Start = Lotsa Iron Skins.
Middle-way = Some Iron Skins and some summons
End = Lotsa summons. Jaheira and Minsc can sit in a corner and watch the show. Or maybe not, since Jaheira has those druid spells and Minsc can use item powers (like lightning, mass cure, strenght, invisibility, spell turning, Larloch's Minor Drain, etc.)

I actually had good success with the first party I used to beat the game:

Me – Swashbuckler dualled to a fighter. I only wanted a ultility thief (hadn’t discovered the joys of backstabbing yet, and I still don’t use it in a full-sized party). I think I dualled long swords and scimitars.
Keldorn – 2 handed sword (of course)
    Mazzy – Tansheron/Gesen
Haer'Dalis – added Kundane (I kinda like him – I think his offensive spin is very under-rated)
    Valygar – Katana’s
Aerie – mainly slings and spells.

Maybe not the most powerful party, but it worked for me.

    Jan-KICK ASS
    Valger
Cerend- the greater werwolf form is just great

Dose any one else think that there are too little characters in this game

If we are talking about best *ability*, then you MUST include the three evil people.
Korgan is by far the best fighter. Right proficiency, right class, right race, right portrait(to wear helm of baldurun, the best helm). There's no way Minsc or Keldorn or whatever who is better than this guy.
Viconia has 19 dex, 18 wis, 65% magic resistence, what more do you want for a character?
And Edwin is even better than a sorcerer. He has more spells and better spells than a sorcerer. Plus he has a +1 to save in the game.
A lot of people think Jaheira is good. Press F2 and let the three evil people fight Jaheira one on one, see who wins. You can use all your iron skins and insect plagues.
So the best party should be you, three evil NPC and two other NPC.
Valygar is the best backstab NPC. So theoratically he does most damage. And he is the right person to wear shadow dragon plate. Jaheira, Keldorn and Aerie are also OK.

I must be the only person to like Mazzy. I think she is equivalent in many ways to Korgan. True she lacks the immunities of the berserk, but I don't find that to be critically important anyway. Take a look at her special abilities, add that she can GM her chosen weapons (just like Korgan), add the halfling saving throws, add her totally hot appearance and cute dialog.

Mazzy dual wielding bastard sword + short sword is my all time favorite weapon combination.

I mean Korgan is a top shelf fighter, but so is Mazzy, and Mazzy can also GM in the axe if you want to do it.

PC(thief)- I have no confidence in any of the npc thiefs. (dualing C-F and Daystar/short swd of backstabbing or crossbow)

Korgan - (Crom Feayer and Frostreaver +3 axe)
Minsc - (Dragons bane Halbeard - because of his phrase)
Anomen - (Flail of Ages and Mace of disruption)
    Jahiera - (Gnasher +2/sling +5 Sentenial shield total of -14 AC )
Edwin - (staff of magi or sling of everade)

Hmm, well, it isn't as powerful as some of the other parties posted here, but I had a lot of fun playing with:

    PC-elf wizard/no spec
    Minsc
    Valygar
    Jaheira
    Aerie
    Nalia/Imoen

It's a tough party to win with, but it was a lot of fun.

If you want an easier game:

    PC-ranger dual wielding longswords
    Minsc
    Jaheira
    Viccy
    Aerie
    Nalia/Imoen

i nearly fully agree with 14, except that i dont pick up any neutrals. party of 4 is enough, the everdiscussed comparison of smaller group and faster lvling.

i created a half-orc fighter/thief and picked up edwin viconia and korgan.

my char has 5 points in longbows ... thats like wielding a minigun and hunting rabbits in the early stages of the game
