According to the manual, my bard with an 18 str should have a 20% chance of bashing open locked doors and chests. Why can't he open the chest upstairs in the Candlekeep Inn? (The one with the potion in it, not the really hard one) I've had begining thiefs lockpick it and fighters with 18/ str bash it, why can't he!?

Because beginning thieves have a better chance of lock picking it, and fighters with 18/-- STR have a higher strength and therefore a better chance of opening it.

Better chance, Yes! I'm talking no chance here :( I tried it over 100 times, so I think I would have got my 20% in there at some point ;)

I think once you've tried your luck on a chest/door/whatever, your success or failure are flagged for it, unless something about your character changes (level, %, etc.)

So you could try indefinitely and it wouldn't be any different than the first time. But I'm not 100% sure about this, since it's not the same in all IE games.

    I think you´re right Tal.
Your first strike sets it. And I´ve also found that if you haven´t got it open on your forth hit you might aswell give up.

I've noticed that some locks can never be bashed open or picked, unless you are a certain level. I believe they achieve this be setting the default level as a -ve %, like most of the locks in TOTSC.

There are several chests in the prologue that can't be opened by bashing unless you have 18/xx in strength. There is also the lock in the inn that can't be opened unless you have 50% or better in opening locks - this gives you a gem worth 500-1000gp I think.

So, if your bash percentage is 20%, but the percentage for the chest is -30%, your base percentage to open it would still be -10% and you would still failt no matter what.

You can try as many times as you like and some locks that will still open, but there are a few that never will no matter what.

I believe Bard must be right here, because there has been quite a few times it took me two or three attempts to bash open a lock. Thanks for the replys :)
