You have to hide in shadows an approach the target from behind; your next attack will be an attempted backstab. I believe you must have an appropriate stabbing weapon as well such as a short sword or dagger. I'm sure others here can give you a more complete list of the appropriate weapons for backstabbing.

The damage done depends on the level of your thief. If you look at your stats it should tell you your backstab multiplier. When you make a successful backstab, that number is multiplied by the normal damage done by the weapon to come up with the damage the backstab did.

yep BTA got the jist of it. to complete the weapons list you can backstab with long swords as well. but thats it. you cant use bastard swords, 2-handed swords or any other weapon to backstab.

Depends on what you're specialized in... Where do you put your stars when leveling up?

In BG1 it seems to me at least that most of the good weapons are swords. Bows are very useful too, since ranged attacks are a must.

The best weapons definately were swords. I finished with Varscona(sp?), obtained south of Nashkel, Frostbrand and Defender, both obtained from Dritzz himself, and was lugging around Spiders Bane, found around the apropriate creatures, and a two handed sword +3 obtained from the expansion pack. Most other weapons are no better than +2 at best. There were some nice long bows, but I can't name them off hand.

    Scattered throughout the game...
In a day or two I'll have our old infobot files online and you'll be able to look up the locations and some personal notes from the old EFnet #baldursgate operators for all BG and TSC items, quest items, persons... etc.

I'll probably call it Baldur's Gate Encyclopaedia or something like that. It's a huge resource... It'll make a fine addition to Sorcerer's Place, wait and see. ;)

[IMG] If all goes well, it'll be up in the next 24 hours. It'll be posted at the front page at http://www.sorcerers.net/index.php but I'll also post it here so you can't miss it.

I'm already half way through it. ;)
