Ok you maybe wondering what? But look at this screenshot. I was playing around in Baldur's Gate and-

    http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/4940/baldr0017ua.png

I backstabbed through metal plates with a 6-9 foot piece of wood....I never thought that was possible.

Now I'll try backstabbing with a Warhammer

    *EDIT*
    Warhammer idea failed

Only staves work, IIRC. We at SP have termed it a "backsmack".

Backstab is really a misnomer for the attack. You can "backstab" with any weapon a single-class thief can use which includes staves and clubs.

Clubs also work. In essence, any melee weapon a straight thief can equip can be used for backstabbing.

Edit: Ooops, BTA was faster. I have to stop using the full reply page

I'd like to claim credit for that particular neologism :p ;)

EDIT: FYI, a staff of striking is the best backsmacking weapon going! The damage done is truly ridiculous. There was a thread about it at the Ironworks forum, but I can't find the URL. If anyone knows, could they post it? Ta! :)

Just FYI, but there are no super clubs in BG1. There are clubs... and well, 1 enchanted club that never made it in the game. That's it. Stick with staves for the backsmacking.

backstab is the term used in d&d. it has always been possible with any thief melee weapon, and just means a sneak attack to a vital spot. hitting an unsuspecting victim with a blunt object in the back of the head or neck is very nasty!~
