Yes, you can. :) There are a few staves in Shadows of Amn with high enchantment which are good to backstab with. And one in Throne of Bhaal that's really good to backstab with.

Any melee weapon a single classed thief can use can be used to backstab.

However...Staff of the Magi is still VERY useful.

Backstab with whatever weapon you want, equip SotM, run away...rinse and repeat.

Plus, you can use it to whack a Mage and dispel his stoneskins and what not before going Invisible again and running away...and COMING BACK!

Hello there. You guys do realize tipperon is asking about backsmacking and not backstabbing, don't you? :hmm:

Yes, you can backsmack with a staff, but I'm not sure about a club. I don't usually use clubs for that, mostly to get rid of annoying trolls. :)

There is a such thing as touch poisons. In Pen and Paper the Assassin actually made touch poisons after a certain level and the damage increased as you leveled up. It was kind of neat.

As starwalker said, there are poisons that activate on contact with the skin. Also, you can get a nasty infection from an untreated splinter.

Because thieves aren't allowed to wield maces. Here's the big list of weapons useable by thieves: long sword, short sword, katana, scimitar, dagger, club, quarterstaff, crossbow, shortbow, dart and sling.

but as a cleric/thief? backstabbing with a mace shouldn't be something beyond a thief's skills

You can't backstab or backsmack with a weapon a thief can't use. I don't see what is so hard to understand about that. It's the rules of the game. A C/T cannot backsmack with a mace! Why? Because a thief cannot backsmack with a mace! A cleric can use a mace, but a cleric cannot backsmack/stab!
