It was my understanding that assassins can only be evil or chaotic neutral, but last night I was in the process of creating one and all alignments except lawful good were available. Has anyone else seen or heard of this? I like playing good characters, so its not a problem for me per se; I just want to know what is causing it. Also, I have installed the Beta 24699 patch, but anytime I go to the game options screen it still reads 24698, which is beginning to make me wonder. Thoughts?

In PnP, assassins have to be evil (at least according to the rule sets I read back in 2ed.) But in BG, like any other thief, an assassin can be anything but LG.

I think the AD&D rulebooks state only evil and CN, as you said.

However, as I've posted elsewhere, I do think that good thieves and assasins have their place. More as elite spies, doing reconnaisance, and information theft. In my role-playing mind, my CG assasin uses a knockout drug instead of poison on humanoid opponents, delivered on darts of course. She only steals when absolutely necessary to get materials needed to save the world.

I believe that James Bond would qualify as a LG assasin. (LG in motives, CG in methods)

[IMG] Wouldn't Bond be Lawful Neutral? Im basing this question from all the novels I read (Fleming, Gardner and Benson). It does make sense, given the description of the alignment in the game.

Bond probably does not thoroughly enjoy killing a person. I believe that an assassin will be adept at secretly killing, but to be a "real" assassin, he or she also must enjoy the look on the victims face. The gasp when the knife is plunged in the victim's back. Staring into her eyes as she dies. That kind of stuff. That's what separates an asssassin (who can't be good, AFAIK) from a normal trained killer.

IMHO, assassins shouldn't be good. An "assassin" might just be a thief who backstabs you, but a "real" assassin would be the person described above. Definitely not good. Or probably neutral. Law/Chaos is really not a factor here.

Bond, from what I gather, is LN. Agreed with Gabriel. Something like a Fighter/Thief.
