im about to start roleplaying a nuetral evil assasian and was wondering what weapons or equipment i should be looking out for? i thought maybe a ninja-to but there aren't any good ones? A katana seems to bulky for an assasian to use but what do you think?

what missile weapon would an assasian use? i thought maybe a light crossbow as they are small and easy to conceal or poisoned throwing daggers?

and lastly if i use shadow keeper to change my avatar to a shadow their will that be ok? no crashing the game?

Nothing your other PC's wouldn't be wearing. As long as you do the mahor sidequests you'll have the best in time.

No, but there are good scimitars.

It's actually a good choice, since Katanas can be wielded pretty and kept discrete as easily as a short sword with the some skill. :)

You'll need a point in short bows, since there are a good lot of them... Unfortunately there's only one Light Crossbow which could benefit you as much.
Poisoned Daggers are a good choice, as well.
    Minor Spoiler:
There's one from Ust Natha you should buy.

If you meant Shadow Thief the only downside will be the lack of a paper doll.
If you want to be a Shadow... Try the former. ;)

Go shortbows for the bow of gesen (good damage with poisoned weapon, plus 2 shots per round) and invest in katanas to maximize backstab damage (you'll need to, assassins are weak in toe to toe combat). You may also want to put points in daggers for firetooth +3, an excellent weapon to have before you get the bow of gesen.

Tuigan's bow is a good choice until you can get Tasheron's bow.

    <There are a few minor spoilers here>

The best equip i've found are (early game to mid game):

5 Rings of Air Control (from Ribald)

Tuigen Short Bow (3 shots per round) or if you really really want to use crossbows there is the Light Crossbow of Speed available from Bernard's Store (2 shots per round)

Millions of arrows (mod to allow stacking to 9999) and don't forget to steal the Arrows of Dispelling from the fletcherer in Waukeens Prom.

Aegars Hide Armour (From Ribald - even better with the Item upgrade mod)

    Boots of Speed

    Cloak of non-detection

    girdle of stregnth

the stone from the Spider Queen woman - i forget its name but gives you +10% hp and +1 thac0

    potions of invis.

gloves of pickpocketing then later some thing that improves thac0.

As for weapons, go for what you like as there are usually decent picks in many of the weapon types. Favourites include Blade of Roses longsword and Malakar katana (although Celestial Fury is alot better).

As for daggers - as said before the Firetooth is the best dagger I know of (from Ust Natha). Before that though you can get the Boomerang dagger off Captain Dennis in the Bridge District.

One last word - the hit and run tactic is your friend :)

You can't get the [ToB-only ability] in SoA, therefore no scarlet ninja-to. Personally, I would equip celestial fury and leave the off-hand free for the single weapon AC and critical bonus, great for backstabbing. The assassin gets some major penalties for dual wielding.

Try a boomerang dager, there are a couple in the game and they can be used in melee or ranged combat modes. Darts are pretty good as you can throw three per round. The short sword of backstabbing could be good since you will be doing a lot of it, but I suspect that your looking for something a bit more ninja-like

If only there wern't short-katana of throat slitting or something.

I have always considered cross-bows to be more thief like than bows, as they can be used in a smaller area of space and can be better concealed. but that is just a personal oppinion.

Note: Most of the above I said(typed) assuming that you are a halfling, could you please verify this.

Go katana. The highest backstab damage weapon in the game avaliable to theif is celestial fury. Higher damage=higher backstabs=dead mages. Which is all the assassin is really good for (i'm kidding, he has other uses.). Give him bow to use in battle once he finishes back stab. On the other hand, if you have the improved theif stronghold mod, you can buy unlimited potions of invisibility. If this is the case you may want to give him single weapon style for ac bonus. Then just go through the whole game back stabbing. 50 potions should get you through all the tough battles in soa easily, and wont cost more than 20000 im pretty sure.

Not really, I mean...there's all those difficult fights where you can't backstab, which I found out the hard way while soloing this neutral good assassin...weird RP, I know.

Anyway, the thing is, you cant backstab dragons, or liches, or Irenicus, and lots of other baddies whom you can't backstab. And what about all those mages with True Sight? I dont think Non-Detection covers True Sight...

So you see...the poison weapon would be of more use in those particular parts of the game, seeing as Firkraag goes down like a felled tree, once you can hit him with three poisoned arrows of biting per round with the Tuigan Bow...then run away, and then hit him again when the poison runs out...thats how I killed him when soloing.

    Cheesy but effective.

There is a Staff that you can buy from the Temple of Lothlandir(sp?) in the temple district. It has a +9 enchantmet, but can only be used 9? times. IIRC it can be used to backstab.
    therefore:
+9 staff + lvl 21 assasain with x7 backstab dammage = foe who is significantly more dead than if you used CF

In case of 21 STR and a +2 damage bracers with:
    - CF the average backstab: 76 damage
    - +9 staff: 83 damage

That 7 doesn't mean too much i think. And after the CF hit you still have good chance to stun the target, so the next hit is guaranteed if the 76 was not enough. Single wield also grants -2 AC...
    :)

(With the Item Upgrade mod CF is a +5 weapon, that case the average is 78, the hit is more likely  )

I would bet on the CF. And anyhow the staff in the hand of an assassin... strange. Dagger, arrow, and swords! :D Something with edges...

Ohhh, just rekindled my love affair with Kuriosan's katana (can't spell its name :( ) - Get it from the tactics mod, the celestial fury is a kitten in comparison. The assassin is king of death with this baby!

Scarlet Ninjito is only for monks. Too bad.

Kundane is a pretty good short sword. It is +2 with an extra attack per round.

Arbane's short sword is pretty good for its free action early in the game, where you fail your save vs paralyzation often.

Cutthroat is a short sword +4 that lets you hit everything in the game except clay golems.

Neutral evil you say? Then you should have no qualms about wearing the Human Flesh +5... but that is very late in the game.

Always stow away ANY item that boosts your thieving abilities (eg: ring of lockpicking, ring of danger sense, etc.) You will need to pull them out occasionally because assassins only get 15 thief points to distribute per level, and you want good hide in shadows (for backstabbing).

Keep loads of potions of invisibility (backstabbing, avoiding melees), and some potions of mastery thievery (lock picking), and potions of perception (trap disarming).

Hide in shadows plus the Cloak of Non-Detection is immune to True Sight. However, invisibility potions/spells plus the cloak, to the best of my knowledge, will be dispelled by True Sight.

Cloak of Non-detection doesn't give any protection from true sight once it is cast. It does stop mages from detecting the presence of an enemy until an action or attack is made - which usually led to them ruining your pre-emptive strike.

Also, I've never really figured out how useful Move Silently was - if it is high enough does it function the same way as Cloak of non-detection?

Detect Illusion is extremely handy for dispelling Invisibity, mislead, project image, simulacrum (not sure bout this one), mirror image, hidden thieves.... well lets just say all Illusions, eh.
