Are safe cities a vain dream?

    Murders, drug deals, gangs, muggings, all the rest of it.

    Are some cities better than others?

    Do we just have to go on with life, subconsciously recognizing it can happen even to us and cross our fingers we don`t become a statistic?

    Or is there hope for safe cities for our families?

    No. Cities will never be as safe as non-urban areas. It is a function of the racial and economic makeup of cities that will always hinder them.

    Depends how safe you are looking for. I doubt we can ever fully eradicate crime without measures so draconian as to be actually detrimental to our quality of life, but yes, there is room for improvement.

    Per Beren's request, I'll reply in this thread:

    And again, I'll say that the number is a bit skewed in that the actual city - not the metropolitan area - is actually quite small, but it also has a few really bad areas. Hearing about a shooting on the nightly news is practically a daily event. And for the record, I live in Baltimore County - not Baltimore City. So I'm part of the "metropolitan area" around Baltimore.

    Also for the record, 28 doesn't seem that bad LKD for a city of that size.

    It is for Canada! Barmy's joke may nit gave been 100% accurate, but there is a kernel of truth in it in that from what little I know, we are way ahead of most other municipalities in Canada no matter how you work the numbers.

    One word: Education.

    To cut a long sob story short, I have a very, very bad feeling about how my son-in-law manages his personal economy (he lives by himself as of next month). However, tonight was the night for the impossible to happen. We actually sat down, no nonsense and constructive, and I made a quick calculation for his personal budget with the figures he provided himself. And we quickly came to the conclusion that he's just a hair above the "you're f**ed for life" line unless he keeps his expenses in check.

    He didn't say it loud, but I could hear the point of this small exercise fall down into fertile soil. Knowing his temper and short-sightedness, I just may have saved our fair city from a soon-to-become-criminal. God knows but doesn't tell, but at least I now have a smidgeon of hope for the guy. :)
