right, so I'm just now going to play this game for the first time :)

anyway, i did a search and read some of the posts concerning it but none of them really gave me what i was looking for.

I'm planning on playing an elven magic-oriented character. also, he wont be an ass-kissing character or an "i'll kill you for no reason" character, but an actual reflection of my own character which I guess I'd classify as a CG/LN mix.

my question is, how should I build this character? tips regarding what spell schools, skills and the like would be useful, thanks.

Put skill points in Bow and Dodge. Get the spells from the Fire, Time, White Necromancy and Conveyance school. Persuade is also a very useful skill.
You now have a character that can throw fireballs, heal himself when wounded, slow down monsters to easily pick them off with his bow and that can talk himself out of most troubles and be able to gain more quests.

Oh, and I almost forgot the most important thing. He'll be able to teleport himself anywhere on the map in an instant. It'll save you a whole lot of time.

In the beginning I would say that Bow and Dodge are very important. There are plenty of arrows to be found in the game. The first spell is a little tricky maybe Time or Conveyance.

Have fun with the game. I like it.

I love this game, altough I've never finished it... Enjoy it!

Charactet building depends largely on what type of character you want to play. The beauty of Arcanum is that it allows you to build pretty much anything. Personally, I like my mages to keep being mages. That said, I never spend any points in combat skills.

The beginning is not particularly tough, so I'd recommend increasing Willpower at first. In this way, when you need medium to high-level spells you will already have the requirements.

I find Persuassion extremely useful, as you can talk your way out of many situations. Also, because I normally have an INT of 10 or more, dialogue options are increased. Note also that INT also determines the number of spells that you can maintain at the same time.

Magickwise, the Conveyance school is quite useful, especially when you can start using Teleport. Even at low levels, Disarm and Unlocking Cantrip are very handy.

The Force and Fire schools have some of the most useful combats spells, as it has been said. One of the most cost-effective spells, specially when your magickal level is high enough, is Black Necromantic's Harm.

Unlike DnD, spellcasting in Arcanum is not hindered by the use of armor (provided that it's not technological armor, that is), so you may want to use this to your advantage.

At the end of the game, I had maximum level in Conveyance, Divination, Fire, Black Necromancy, White Necromancy and Summoning, and it was ridiculously easy throughout the whole game. Fireflash is a very nice spell, especially if you become a Fire Master. Fireflash and Drain Life are really the only offensive spells you'll need. Get to Tarant as fast as possible and do the non-comabt quests to gain some levels, then wander the wilderness and smack some bandits until you're too powerful to be hurt, which really doesn't take long. Invest in Persuasion. No other skills are needed; I didn't take any others.
