How about posting info about your hardware config and what DirectX you have. Also, did you make any changes to your computer since the last time you created a character (assuming that you ever did)?

What is that pathetic sound card? And what OS do you use?
If it's C-media on WinXP, install the latest driver available on the Internet.

Also, have you updated GeForce drivers? If yes, check if disabling (yes, disabling) of the hardware acceleration on that card will help for this issue.

Also, please check the amount of free space on your hard drive.

huum, I know it is a stupid question, but HOW do I update my Geforce driver? Never had to do so.

I've often had the same problem...still having it I guess. If you do find some way to fix it make sure you post it here so i can fix it too! :D

PS. I know its not a real solution, but I've found that if you've loaded up a game with another character first, then go back to the character creation screen, you'll be able to see what changes your making. <shrug> Not perfect but oh well.

Honestly, that CD burner could be a possible culprit as well. Sometimes whenever you install another drive like that, settings need to be changed and your drive configuration may be remapped. I had the same problem with BG2. Your original drive may not have the same drive letter that it used too.

I don't know for sure, but wanted to add another possibility.
