Anyone know of an easy way to take words off songs?

Discussion in 'Whatnots' started by DeBhaal Stasion, Apr 28, 2002.

  1. [IMG] Ive heard some really not so good songs, that had really good bacground music. I was wondering if anybody here knows an easy way I could erase the vocals from songs and leave the music.
    Any help would be greatly appriciated.

    {note:I would prefer it be a downloadable program, but if the only way you know is to go and buy a program, I may look into it.}

    [IMG] Winamp (or one of its plugins) can do it.

    Yes, winamp can do it, just like a lot of other programs, and what they all have in common is that they don't do it very well, unfortunately... You can't just take the vocals away from an ordinary wave, cda or mp3, because it is only two channels: left and right. So if the vocals were all panned right, and the rest of the song all left, you could take them out, but, well, let's just say most songs aren't like that. So instead, what those programs do is cut out the parts of the equalizer where you usually have the vocals, high midrange, lower treble area, and on some songs, this works, particularly simple pop songs if the singer has a high voice (it seems to work best with girls' voices)... but of course, vocals aren't the only thing that gets lost when you cut that part of the EQ, you lose some of guitars, drums, keyboards, piano, and such that take up the same space in the mix. The result is usually a pretty muddy recording, and even though it works for karaoke, I suppose, I wouldn't use it for making a remix or anything like that...

    [IMG] Tal: Does that work the other way round? Can you remove the backing and add your own to the words?

    Not with Winamp. You'd need something more sophisticated for that. And files of better quality than mp3.

  6. Since it has been noted that Winamp would not be the best for quality reason. Anyone know of a more sophisticated program(preferably free download) that I can find?

    Search for a MIDI of the song. It's instrumental, but hella cool.
