Teen puts a blow-up doll in a bathroom stall and is arrested for disorderly conduct (a misdemeanor) and insitutional criminal mischief (can be a felony depending on damages).

They're stretching the "damage" to include time lost because they called the bomb squad so it reaches the felony level.

What is wrong with the authorities that a kid can't be a kid and do some stupid but harmless pranks without being arrested and charged with a felony? And the prosecutor is "comfortable with the charges that we've filed".

Unbelievable. At most there should have been some disciplinary action within the school. Neither of the charges as I read them in Indiana's penal code really fit what he did IMO.

In Germany there would be no charges, but the kid would have to pay for the cost of the bomb squad mission. On the other hand, calling the bomb squad was a hysterical overreaction in its own right and hardly adequate here, so the kid probably would get away without that.

Interestingly, 'criminal mischief' as a felony (or 'Grober Unfug'), as a catch-all for things cops may find deserving of punishment, including looking at them cross-eyed, was taken off the book in Germany because it was too broad and vague (it covered many many things between everything from public urinating, splashing water at pedestrians by driving through a puddle to taking a walk in trunks etc - all hardly felonies) and thus unconstitutional (since criminal offences must be clearly defined). What the hell is criminal mischief anyway? This? Gimme a break.

I agree that it's an over-reaction, and I also agree that it doesn't fit the description of criminal mischief - nothing was damaged.

Felony for a prank like that sounds absurd. The kid did something completely harmless, and a lot less punishable imo than, say, graffiti. To jeopardize his future over something like that is uncalled for, unconscionable and imo immature. It is sad that educators, people whose profession is to help raise the next generation of men and women, give such an example. I hope the guy gets off without any serious problem and that incident doesn't give him any trouble going to college, finding a job, and having a great life.

Seriously, the gall of some people. You give your old school a nice present to remember you by (and remember they likely will), and those things aren't cheap when you are an 18-year-old. And what do you get for your trouble - they stab you in the back like that. Then, to top it off, these same people will in a few years ask for support from their alumni. The nerve!

you are kidding me right? every school would heve the bomb squad out on a regular basis just for kids dropping off their homework.
