Another gang rape in India ...

    This happened just four weeks after the previous one, and in almost identical circumstances, facilitated by the bus driver.

    Laxity in law enforcement can lead to this kind of problem, I'm well aware of that. But this occurred not just after national outrage, but after police beat the suspects of the previous rape, so these latest rapists must have known that whatever laxity there had been was evaporating.

    Is there something about India in particular that's causing this? :(

    Yeh, they are finally starting to report and take things like this seriously. Like so many other "modern" moral outrages the only thing that makes them modern is that people actually react nowadays and not just sweep it under the rug. That we hear about them is a good thing, just like it is a good thing when we heard about that rape the footballers did in the US. 30 years ago the girl would be labelled a **** and that would be that.

    Very disturbing. No idea if there's anything particular about India, but when I watched the news yesterday, several men that were interviewed stated that women who wear jeans or use cell-phones (!) can only blame themselves...

    Two gang rapes in four week in a country with ... what ... over a billion people in it. That violent crime occurs at this frequency for a high population is not the issue. The issue is the government (in particular the police) response -- we'll see if their are any improvements this time.

    Yeah, I think there were something like 900 rapes in my town in 2012. I'm sure no form of rape is nice (though surely gang rape is comparatively worse), but the fact that two of these happened in India doesn't really indicate some kind of rape crimewave. People just get geeked up over these types of incidents due to the especially lurid and offensive depictions - something the media no doubt capitalizes on.

    You need to remember that only a small number of rapes is actually reported. Probably even much fewer in India where rape is traditionally blamed on the woman...
