    you don't really need to, take it to the merchant and he'll direct you to the tanner,

    The animal trainer disappears if/when you tell him the good news that you saved the circus. If not he'll be standing on a platform in Waukeen's Promenade. But, as the others have said, he's not needed for this quest.

    I found him on the platform after being given this red herring and he just basically ran off. I think I told him the circus was clear and couldn't restart any conversation.
