An odd look for websites on my work's computer...

Ok, so my work's break room has two computers that have internet access. When they were first set up, everything worked fine. The BoM looked normal; as did every other site I went to. But last week something had changed. The BoM doesn't look anything like it should. The blue background isn't displayed; the "fuzzy" blue background on the SP main page doesn't show up, no dividers...nothing except links, text, and a very boring white background.

It's almost as if someone had disabled the use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). I checked everything I could think of, and reset the security settings to "medium-low" and "reset defaults" everywhere else that I could...but nothing changed.

I white BoM just looks creepy. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? :hmm: :rolling:

Do pictures display? Which browsers (and versions) are you using there?

Yeah, all the .gif images are displayed just fine. It's just the backgrounds that aren't displayed. The Sorcerers and Sorcerers2 servers aren't the only ones that are affected. Hell...the company's own intranet site doesn't display right.

Tonight I'm using the computer next to the one in question, and everything works fine on this one.

The computers that they so graciously provided for us are Dell OptiPlex GX110 that are running a painfully slow Pentium 3 running at 750MHz with 512MB of RAM. They've got IE 6.0.2

I'd try installing IE7, and see if that fixes things, but these computers don't have the right to install anything. :( :rolling:

Without seeing this in action it's hard to say what could be causing it... I'm not sure if it's possible to disable just css in IE (or even Firefox). There's really no practical application for it. It could be a misconfiguration of some security or firewall program that is causing it...

Complaining to the company's IT department is probably your best course of action.

I had samekind of problem using firefox, the stylesheet option IS probably off, I'm not sure how you turn it back on in IE :o but check everything. It might be in the statusbar, under 'view'.

It could be under accessibility options. There is one that says to ignore colors. That does make SP have a white background.

In IE, there isn't an option called disable style-sheet or anything like that, but check under Tools->Internet Options, and then under the General tab, the 'Accessibility...'-button in the lower right corner. Here you can disable fonts and background images, so make sure they're all unchecked.

If that doesn't work, try socializing with colleagues during your breaks :p

It's possible to set a fixed text size with style sheets, which disallows people with vision disabilities to increase text size. Turning off the style sheets allows them to get around stubborn and ignorant web designers (and yes, this is also possible with Firefox).

EDIT: Or you could listen to what Chas says, considering he was quicker...

Considering that by disabling css you'd also break the layout of most websites, I don't really consider this a worthwhile practical application. Not being able to resize text is the only real problem that I can think of, and that's not an issue with Firefox, which ignores the specified text size, as you've said. IE really should allow this too, for accessibility reasons. There are way too many websites out there with text too small for comfortable reading, even for those of us not visually impaired.

Heh...bad idea. Since I work the overnight shift, there's only one lady in the IT department on my shift...and she's dumber than the brick, and lazy to boot. :toofar:

Cool...I'll check that the next time I'm at work. :D :rolling:
