Is there a way to get this item without being able to pickpocket?

Killing old Algie should do the trick.

 not good for my little guys Reputation. Oh well, I'll go without it then.

I have to admit, I'm tempted to recruit a thief for the job, but that would just take away from the whole solo thing.

I think that there may be two copies of it in the game. Although I might be wrong there.

No, you cannot get it from anywhere except from Algernon, and he's not about to just give it to you. You have to pickpocket him (recommended) or kill him. If you don't have a thief in your party, just do the Silke sub-quest. You can let Garrick join just long enough to pickpocket Algernon, and then kick him out.

I think the 'second copy' that Dranalis is talking about is probably the Nymph Cloak, which does the same thing as Algernon's. You can acquire in the city of Baldur's Gate (coincidentally right around the time you can give Algernon's cloak away to finish a 'fetch' quest).

No, the nymph cloak is not as good as what's his name's cloak. It can only charm person once a day, and not at will...

Yes it is, and yes it can. I robbed the entirety of the city of Baldur's Gate with that cloak. If you charm everyone in a house, they don't mind at all if you take their stuff.

Algernon's Cloak is better then the Nymph Cloak not because it has unlimited charges but because you can charm from afar whearas with the Nymph cloak you walk right next to the target to perform the actual charming. So it is riskier to use. Still it can be a good backup charming item in a party of serial charmers.

And also the Nymph Cloak is not a use per day item, but a charged item that comes with 40 initial charges and can be recharged to 100 by any shopkeeper by selling and buying it back. I have never encoutered a use per day item in BG1. I'm wondering if Bioware hadn't invented them yet. Icewind Dale is the game that introduced them if this is the case. Modders might be able to say if the BG1 engine is capable of it.

Incidentally, you can also pickpocket the Nymph Cloak from Halbazzer Drin the owner of the Sorcerous Sundries before doing the quest to obtain it. But, if you did the foolishness of handing the mighty Algernon's Cloak to Pheirkas you can't pickpocket it back. You have to kill him without any REP loss though.

Ring of Invinsibility is a one use per day item, which afaik is presented in both BG1 and 2.

It is not. When you buy the Ring of Invisibility it comes with 7 charges. It disappears if you use them all, but can be recharged to 8 by selling and buying it back. It is even mentioned in the items description. Special: This item has a limited number of charges. Are you sure you are not talking about Tutu? Because it would use the BG2 version of this ring.

To come back to Algernon and his Cloak. There is a way to get it without pickpocketing or killing him ... yourself. Just charm him (with the Charm Person spell or scroll if you are a mage, the Nymph Cloak if you are not) and make him attack Tranzig. He will be more than happy to kill him for ya. If you have already finished the Tranzig part. There is nobody else left there for him to fight. All is not lost. Summon some monsters and make them go hostile (obviously not by pickpocketing them as you can't) and make Algernon fight them for you. And if you happen to belong to a class that can't summon anything, all is still not lost. Find a cursed scroll of Monster Summoning (Lucky Aello who is a connoisseur in this area has many, don't be cheap and try get one free elsewhere, buy one from him as you need to go to Baldur's Gate to get the Nymph Cloak anyway), it bears a Protection From Fire icon. Summon with it a bunch of dogs or wolves already hostile, and make Algernon defend you with his cloak that he obviously don't know how to use. I would love to hear of soloeing Paladins pulling this trick.
