I'm wanting to find out a bit more about the Forgotten Realms. I got into fantasy via warhammer and Tolkien, recently I've been playing the BG and Planescape games and want to get a bit more into the background. So, the question is, which books would you recommend I start with?

[IMG] Depends on what exactly are you interested in. Aber-Toril in general, or just Forgotten Realms, or just Planescape: Torment, or both, and other worlds...
The core books are usually a good starter. I trust you know where to find them on the site...
There are also a couple of novels which will tell you more about the world, but you would have to read quite a lot of them to get the whole picture. (If at all that way).

If you're especially interested in the Forgotten Realms, wait for a few more months when the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for 3rd edition will be published. Everything about FR that you can buy at the moment will be pretty much outdated when that is released, so I'd wait if I were you. In the meantime buy a few novels and read those. The Avatar trilogy would be a good start if you're into history.

All the books I'm talking about above can be found in our Fantasy Books section at http://www.sorcerers.net/Books/index.php

You could also run a search for similiar topics that were discussed here before. We've been debating this same thing a couple of times.

Thanks, I remember a similar topic about a month back now actually. I'll have a look for it.

You may also want to read the Dragonlance: Chronicles trilogy. It takes place in another world than forgotten realms, but there isn't that big a difference between Krynn and Toril.

The Belgariad series by David Eddings is great too, its in a similar setting. I agree that the Dragonlance Chronicles are great books too.
