I can't remember this quest giving me these many problems when the game first came out. Anyway, I seem to have the item and it has one charge. I don't believe I have used it on the "beholder" though. If I take it to the Avatar at the temple, I get 42,000 points, however, the quest remains in my book. The goofy old preist acts as though I only have half of it when I talk to him.

So, what have I missed? Something seems to be amiss.

    thanks in advance.

Just after you put it together "The unseeing eye" (a huge beholder) should appear. To be honest, I've never tried taking it out without the rod.
After you gave the avatar the rod did it cut to a scene with the avatars diseased followers being freed?

To complete the quest I think you have to go back up to the cults lair and take out the human worshippers. (Most will run away)

You have to kill the Cult leader and then go back to the church that asked you to take the quest.

Interesting side note: If you leave with the rod, you'll die once you exit the dungeon.

    Ouch!

what I had to do to make the quest work finally, is go back to the top of the cave and attack the guards who still behaved as though I only had 1/2 of the rod, just like the nutty preist. Then the beholder finally appeared and since I killed him with the rod, everyone was happy.

I think the game had a bug but not that big of a deal. Thanks all for helping.
