I'm back in college and decided to purchase a laptop for school. I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for something reliable. I'm not looking for a gaming rig or any other high-end computer as I'm going to be using this thing for web-browsing and word processing more than anything. I would like a 3gig processor and 1gig of RAM but that may be out of my budget. Hard drive size isn't a real issue since I'm not going to have a lot on it. Graphics isn't a priority since the most graphics intensive thing I own is NWN. A DVD is preferred but by no means required.

Price is a major issue since I'm having to pay for school myself so I can't go over $1000 though I'm willing to pay for something that's not going to crawl.

I've never looked into buying a laptop before so haven't really kept up with who the good manufactures are which is why I'm asking for advice and suggestions here. At the very least if someone can at least point me in the direction of a reliable manufacturer I can go from there.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Go for a 14 inch screen or less. 15.4 is a tad too cumbersome to take in everyday and carry around with books etc. Most current laptops will do fine non-gaming-performance wise, so just go for the features (wireless card, more USB ports, 2 batteries etc).
Manufacturer wise, I've always found BenQ to be good.

When I bought my laptop so very long ago, I was really into PC World and MaximumPC magazines. I always kept an eye out on their "Top 10" charts.

The laptop I ended up getting was rated as #2 on their "Desktop Replacement" charts for 2 months in a row. I think their ratings are fair, and accruate.

Check out PC World's 'Top 5 "All-Purpose" Laptops'
The ultra-portable, and power laptops they rate are all over your $1000 limit. However, the #1 in the All-Purpose category (a Dell) starts at $820, the #4 laptop (a Lenovo) starts at $875. :rolling:

Get a cheap used laptop from a computer shop. Preferably a shop you trust.
