Given the loaded history with Chechnya and Syria in particular, something like this doesn't exactly come as a surprise. One of those scenarios where I don't think the leaders on any side and at any point in time were in the right, but innocent people still end up paying for it.

Feels like ISIS trying to kick Russia while it's down, or occupied with Ukraine as it were.

Has ISIS signed its own death warrant?

    "ISIS" attack

It's too convenient for me, and the motives don't align. Why would Russia, of all places, be their object of concern with so much going on in Gaza right now? Did they even take credit as they usually do? I heard nothing of it, and admittedly I don't often go searching for their channels of communication.

I had similar thoughts, that maybe it was a black op to distract Russia from the Ukraine. Open up a second front for the Ukraine by giving them a 9/11 equivalent to distract them and blame a convenient target like ISIS.
I have no idea who did it, but it doesn't even have to be a polity, it could be some NGO group or even just a bunch of Ukrainian citizens acting on their own.
Just the idea is to get Russia going after ISIS the way the U.S. went after Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda by framing them.

ISIS did claim responsibility through Amaq last week via telegram and we (the US) had intel that was passed on to Russia about a pending strike. I was thinking in the aftermath there are some similarities with the twin towers. Having the "exit strategy" of the attackers go out through Ukraine is very convenient and puts a heightened focus on a conflict that is losing popularity among the citizens of Russia. If Putin can get even half the rabid fervor Bush was able to steer toward Iraq, there will be a significant escalation in Ukraine.
