I don't understand this. Somehow being arrested and charged with various crimes is INCREASING Trumps popularity and viability as a candidate.

Back in 2010 during the gubernatorial race in Illinois, the person who was picked in the primary as the Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor was pressured to withdraw from the race after being charged with domestic violence against his wife.

Yet when a Republican front-runner gets arrested, their political viability as a candidate for public office is not impacted?
    https://www.pewresearch.org/short-r...-americans-views-of-trump-over-the-past-year/
Why aren't they calling for him to withdraw?

Politicians in the US are generally scum, regardless of political orientation. Remember Bill Clinton and the "Oral Office" who even lied in court that he has never had sex with that women?

If a group sees itself being persecuted by the state who wants to change their way of life then they will develop a rebel mentality where everyone who stands up against the evil state is a hero. Simple as that.

I am one of those people whose support for Trump increases the more they invent novel legal theories specifically to target this one man and specifically for political reasons. The entire history of the legal assault on him since 2016 can not be justified by the evidence, precedent, common sense, or proper procedure.

    Well put.

I always saw it as blowback for Trump's "Lock her up" campaign slogan.
That said, I also thought the defamation cases, and the one about what amounts misleading people about his business' worth in New York had merit. The latter because of how little he pays in taxes. It's comparable to my taxes and I make less than 30K a year. I thought rich people were supposed to pay more in taxes.

"supposed" is the right word. Sure the normal view is that more income = more taxes. However rich people, especially rich people running a business have a lot of options and usually good tax advisers who help them to evade taxes.

Some of that is even legal - anyone can deduct some expenses from his tax depending on the tax laws of the country.

Bill lied about about having a consensual extramarital affair. There are 3 people that have any right to know or care about that, and none of us are one of those 3 people. (Unless Bill, Hillary or Monica are SP members)

Trump tried to overturn the results of a lawful election, stole classified documents and lied about it, and attempted to use executive power to attack his political enemies. These things are not the same.

As a politician Trump is an opportunist with no morals. Like many good businessmen, he lies as a matter of course and cares mostly for his own interests. I have no particular problem with this approach, though his inflammatory rhetoric might not be such a good thing with the world as it is at the moment.
Overall, just meh. I did not feel strongly towards either candidate.

Frankly, it upsets me more that in these times when the US badly needs a good leader no one seems to be stepping up except for some ancient and dubious 60+ year olds. The fact that apparently no one sane wants the job is both telling and depressing.

As for the man himself, I worked at Walmart during the pandemic and I will forever remember just how badly this man handled a national crisis. Things were so bad that it took some random high school teenager with more will than actual programming skills to jumpstart the effort to track the progress of the pandemic while all Trump and his cabinet could do was lie and point fingers. The "essential workers" held the line with barely any hazard pay and only "thoughts and prayers" worth of support, and it took the big companies stepping in to nudge the government to get their fucking shit together.
I will personally never trust the man again with events of a similar nature.

Which is why I'm disgusted that people voted him back in.
Sure, they might have a point that the economy was doing good right up until the COVID crisis, even if consumer protections were being eroded in favor of helping Big Business and the little people were getting shafted.
However, he had shown that the minute a real crisis happened he went into denial and finger pointing rather than actually addressing the problem, hoping somebody else outside his organization would step up to make it all go away.
He utterly mismanaged it, and I wouldn't trust him with the responsibility again. What if another crisis happens?

I wasn't too enthusiastic about Biden, but I saw him as the lessor evil. I really wanted a third option, but there wasn't anybody on the ballot.
Heck, by the time the Illinois primary had rolled around, everybody else running against Trump or Biden had bowed out of the race. I felt I had no say in who got on the ballot for either party. Everything was decided on Super Tuesday nearly a month earlier and any primaries afterward didn't matter even though it was only about 1/3 of the electoral votes on Super Tuesday and less than half the electoral college total at that point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this have to do more with being able to get proper political and financial backing than anything else? Being a politician in the US means being a businessman: pleas your stakeholders so they'll end up backing you. The choice in leadership you get for the presidential election has nothing to do with who is best to serve the country, but who is better at reaching that position from a political and financial standpoint. Do you have enough money, the right friends and the right attitude for winning. Nobody cares about leadership skills except for the voters, but they don't count in the initial selection for presidency.

In every election people look at pictures who they are going to vote - that´s why candidates pet children and kiss dogs and such things. Everything the candidates present officially including their marriage can be reason for people to vote for them. "Hey, he´s a familiy man, he has my vote!". "Divorced? Will never get elected."

IF a candidate does not want to have his affairs made public then he ought to keep them private. So not using your wife for pretty pictures to gain votes, not using the official office for your private affairs etc. Not presenting a wife that you´d rather divorce as the love of your life to have a better chance to get elected.

When the US president cheats on his wife despite his oath then his reputation is damaged, not only as a future husband for other woman. If he does during office times with someone supposed to actually work for her money while he works for his money he is practically getting paid with tax money for screwing his intern or whatever else he did.

So, no. Either keep your private affairs completely private OR use your wife and dog to gain symphaties but then everyone is in the boat when you cheat on either your wife or dog.

As I did not state that they are the same, I´m at a loss what you are trying to argue.

Both Bill Clinton and DONald tRump are well known to have had affairs and it didn't affect their electability.
Clinton was known to have had oral sex in the Oval Office and still got re-elected.
The only other President I can think of that might have had an affair is JFK, and we never got to find out if he would have been reelected or not because someone shot him.

Lady Bird walked in on LBJ while he was "familiarizing" himself with one of the secretaries....

There are books about President infidelities ... Harding, Wilson, FDR, JFK and LBJ are just the more well known.
