I just found these at the Indian Trails library "Book Sale" last weekend:

I saw no sign of Mass Effect 1, just #2 and #3.
I haven't played any of the Mass Effect games.
How easy will it be to jump in with Mass Effect 2 (or 3) when I haven't played the first one?

Also, are there any must-have third party mods I should install before ever playing like the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games have Baldurdash/G3 fix pack and the ease-of-use/G3 Tweaks (the latter applies all IE games), or the way you really need the Circle of 8 mod for Temple of Elemental Evil if only to save yourself from eyestrain?

Hi. I started with ME2 too. It doesn't matter much. You get some more recources if you have Rich achievement in ME1 and paragon/renegade points when you import a Shepard from ME1. You can lower difficulty to compensate if you want. I don't think you need any third-party mods. There are some non-essential mods on nexus mods but i didn't try them.

ME2 was the first game of the series i played as well, got hooked on it no problem.
I did like ME2 so much though, that i atually went and grabbed ME1 to play afterward, just so i got the whole story.

You miss a significant chunk of the story by starting with ME2, as well as some of the choices that affect the sequels. You can almost always get a copy for a few dollars on Steam or Origin, so I would recommend playing it. It's worth noting, however, that ME1 came before EA bought BioWare, which made for an obvious shift in gameplay.
