I'm trying to get some rolls at character creation that I'm comfortable with, but it's not going well. I've actually physically rolled with a die and got stats I'm okay with, but I can't get them in the game. I've looked around and some people believe that there's a CTRL+8 hotkey at character creation which gives you max stats which I could then bring down to what I've rolled physically, but I can't get it to work at all, though I can get the console in game - I assume it's not actually a thing?

The CTRL+8 only works in BG2, Tutu, or Trilogy. It might work in EE, I don't know.
What you can do is use the console to CLUAConsole:CreateItem("BOOK03",99), CLUAConsole:CreateItem("BOOK04",99) through CLUAConsole:CreateItem("BOOK08",99) and just use the stat-moding tomes to give you what you want.
Or just use GateKeeper/Sword Coast Keeper.

And to get the console, press Ctrl-Tab.

Thanks everyone. I assumed it wasn't a thing in the original BG, looks like it is in EE. Already know how to use the console and Keeper. Guess I'll have to mod the stats in.

As stated, hotkeys were not added until later games. The easiest way is simply to use Keeper. If you have BG2, I would also recommend you use Tutu, unless you're looking for a truly authentic experience. Among a wide variety of additional features, that will also allow you to use hotkeys.

I believe you have to enable cheats by putting cheats=1 or whatever in the .ini file or what not in order to activate the ability to use the ctrl8 function on the original set of Baldurs Gate games. Not sure if that is still a thing in the EE but I think that was true for the original. It might be worth checking.

However that being said it you already have and use Shadow Keeper or something similar it may be easier at this point just to do that.

I don't think that was a thing in the original BG, but I guess if you wanna be sure, you can enable the console, type in CLUAConsole: EnableCheatKeys(); and see if that also enables the ones during character creation. However, I don't recall ever using that in the first game. It was always tomes or Keeper.

I've already modified the .ini file, and I've got the console working fine in the game itself. Ctrl+8 still does absolutely nothing on the character creation screen. I don't think it works in the original game.

The <CONTROL>-<8> hotkey for character creation did not exist until BG2, however the other hotkeys (that I thought of as cheat keys because of the "CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys()" command needed to activate them) did exist. When I first tried the <CONTROL>-<4> I was surprised to see the houses with north-side doors in Beregost that could be entered, the ones that you can't see because of the front of the buildings. (I can't believe how dumb I was back then.)
As for the commands, I gave it in an earlier post.

To be fair, placing interactable areas where they're not actually visible to the player is bad game design. I missed quite a few myself until I started messing around with the console.

Apparently, Ctrl+8 highlights text boxes in the orginal BG. I never had much problems with hard to find doors, as my first introduction to Baldur's Gate was BG2 + ToB and Tab for highlighting is one of those things that should be in any game with loot that you have to pick up manually.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I decided to start from a completely new install as I'd forgotten what was installed previously. I installed the original five CD game (Still got it after all these years!), TOTSC, Baldurdash, Dudleyfixes, and then Unfinished Business. Game started up fine, but character sounds were bugged as hell; not really playing except intermittent little clips, and then on delay. (For example, I loaded up the Mission Pack TOTSC save, and you would click on Edwin, and then five seconds later he would say 'Disturb me!')

I assumed it was a flawed install or one of the additions causing problems, or maybe a scratched CD, so I uninstalled and went for a clean install. After I'd installed the original game I remembered that I'd had a problem with character sounds years ago on this machine so it probably wasn't the mods. And then it occurred to me; I went into the game and disabled environmental audio. The sounds now work completely fine.

Interesting that rolling actual dice averaged better stats than virtual dice. Makes you wonder how that man behind the curtain rolls 'em.

It's possible they use a single random number between 3 and 18, rather than summing 3 random numbers between 1 and 6. That would impose a flat distribution on individual stats. However, it's irrelevant since it averages out over 6 stats and the stat minimums imposed by the character choices make it even more skewed in the players' favor.

That's my roundabout way of saying that you're wrong. Unless you used some high-powered dice roll method, IE games generally give you noticeably better stats than rolling actual dice. Not to mention you can re-roll indefinitely and rearrange points freely after like you were doing point buy.

That is weird, since I would have expected the in-game dice to give you better stats due to having minimums for some races/classes. It is most noticeable if you try to roll up a paladin or ranger in game.

I do recall somebody did an analysis on the dice rolling here many, many years ago. I do NOT have the link.
