I returned to the game last night and I'm at the Temple of Hylea. I turned around because that dragon is too tough for me. So I went back to Twin Elms but I can't get into Burial Isle...Can someone point me in the right direction?

If you're done with communing with the gods in elm's reach, you're going to want to talk to the boatman (found in Oldsong, standing at the western edge of the map at the dock.)
He should offer the option to take you to burial isle.

What do I have to do or where do I have to go to get the council of stars quest? I've pretty much finished Twin Elms...

Just enter the tree temple in Elm's reach - grab the adra crystal from the altar and use it on the pillar, then use all the clickable sigils to commune with their respective gods - AFAIK you need to make a deal with at least one of them since you need their help to get down the hole on burial island. ( though you can choose to not go through on your promise later.)
Getting one of the gods to aid you in getting to Thaos requires you to complete a quest for them before they will agree to help you out.

Ok...I made it to Thaos. I needed food and herbs and healing items for the battle with him so I had to start over from an earlier save. This is one of the 5 or 6 battles that have given me real problems in this game. I can't beat the sky dragon, and I hear the Adra Dragon is the toughest opponent in the game, I cant beat the Ogres and Ogre Druids in Elmshore to even get to the cave in the north part of the map. Elmshore has given me real problems with the large groups of stone and adra beetles and adragans and the battle with the adragan and the wind or rain blights to the south of the former sated group of beasts near the adra pillars. This map has given me fits! I don't have any of the expansions but I've re-fallen in love with this game so I'm going to get white march part one soon. Can you carry over your equipment and copper into white march 1 from PoE? should I try to beat this game or just get White March 1? Tactics for these battles are most welcome and which potions and spells I should use would really help. My thanks...

    My party consists of:
    Rube level 11 Fighter (Me)
    Eder level 11 fighter
    Pellegina level 11 paladin
Hiravius or Durance level 10 Druid/level 10 cleric
Kara level 11 Rogue (excellent companion, A Rogue I hired at an inn early in the game) and
    Aloth level 11 Wizard

I believe you can carry over all items/copper acquired in PoE once the expansions are installed. At least that is the way it worked for me. Albeit I have the 'GoodOldGames.com' version and it is very well done. I just finished the game myself today.

Also looking at your party, you may indeed have 'fits' with numerous encounters on certain maps and in the expansions depending on equipment, scripts set and level up class skills/talents and such. I personally found Eder, Pellegina, Durance, The Grieving Mother and Sagani my line up with my Fighter at the front. But to each their own. Best success with the game.

White March is a very literal expansion in that it opens up new areas on the map and leads you on a long side quest (much like TotSC did for BG). It's not a sequel to the game, so I think you have to play it from before the descent to the Thaos fight (by reloading the final save), so obviously you get to keep everything you have.

I feel like you must have messed up your party quite a bit if you can't take out the sky dragon at that level. You should be able to completely obliterate it with what you have, as it's one of the easiest boss monsters in the game. Either you're doing something wrong or you picked all the wrong choices at level ups. :shake:

    One more thought @lilith21 ...

You may wish to look into the outstanding walkthrough found for Pillars of Eternity here at Sorcerers Place made by the highly respected David Milward. He has some seasoned and respected views regarding the tougher areas/battles. In fact he states regarding the Sky Dragon "... keep in mind that it can be a very tough fight." - I agree wholeheartedly with that view. It took me several attempts to take down each of the Dragons in the game(particularly the Dragon found in the White March 1 Expansion..)

You can find the walkthrough at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/Pillars-of-Eternity/Walkthrough/index.php.

So don't give up hope even after a few defeats/reloads, and the guide from David Milward with his seasoned, balanced and respected views and approaches can help.

White March dragons are considerably more challenging than even the adra dragon. Sky dragon is a pushover. :shake:
