Anyone have experience with will-o'-the-wisps without Protection against Electricity?

Hi I'm making another playthrough and though I am only at the beginning of the Horde Fortress I am considering adding another character now to my party of 2 (humanDruidX/Fighter1; drow RogueX/Diviner7). Those 2 characters aren't that high level yet. Now they are Druid6/Fighter1 - human and Diviner4/Rogue4 drow. The xp is slowing down now that we are at the Horde Fortress. Plus the fights are harder and the gold pieces are wearing thin.

I was thinking of adding a Wizard now who I will eventually need in the Monk Chambers (particularly the 8th). I was considering taking a Deep Gnome IllusionistX. I looked at the spells of the opposition schools which are Abjuration and Necromancy. Both good schools but it seems I don't really need most of the albeit good spells such as Stoneskin, Horror, and Finger of Death. Animate Dead is also a bad spell to miss. This site has convenient information http://www.oldgames.sk/docs/icewind-dale/2/

But in gathering information for my party I also noticed no Protection from Electricity which is a 5th level spell. Has anyone experience with the Willowisps in the Fell Wood WITHOUT protection from electricity?

After the Wizard (3rd character) I believe I will make a Banite Cleric, a Paladin/Sorcerer Spellsword, and maybe a Bard in the 6th slot?? The Banite for the Bane quest in Kuldahar and the Paladin for the Holy Sword.

I will also comment that the Bridge and Prologue were tough with less than a full party. I had never tried that. I am playing on the middle difficulty setting.

I dont get the less-than-full party approach. If you worry about the sharing of xp, squat them. That is, dont level up until your party feel like can not win with ease. The full number will help you overcome the level disparity. in the face of 6 shooters, the Hp got drained pretty fast.

I am at level 2 Ice Temple and my average party level is at 9, though squatting at 10.5. ie some characters can have several level up waiting. My two melee and main shooter are nearly up, but the bard, wizard, and clerics are squatting, because I figure I dont need that much the higher tier cleric spell and transmuter lack usable tier 5.

My question was more about the will o wisp encounter.

As for the party this is first time for me to intermittently add members. I usually do 6 party with squatting.

I never used protection against electricity there.
Just running around and using ranged weapons. Having a DG monk with some spell resistance might have helped a little (but is not needed) ..

I is quite doable without it, although it helps. The main issue is that Protection from Electricity just doesn't give much protection, compared to other AD&D CRPGS.

Doesnt Nathaniel or Nickademus give you 5 scrolls of lightning prot back in Ice temple? Have you spent it all? And/or Oswald's, beodawen's, and the gnome guy's stores all have some potions. Shouldnt they have some thing?

Hi thanks everyone for their responses. In the game right now I am with Ennelia who is a scout who found the Horde fortress with her love Braston. I will keep a look out for scrolls or items later on that grant some protection against electricity. I have a Fighter1/Druid6 and a Rogue4/Diviner4 and am going to add another character and probably a mage or specialist mage who will later on do the 8th chamber (haste, mirror image, summon crap). Right now though I'm spending any game time I have on NWN enhanced edition.

When you rescue her lover you will get a random weapon. Reload to find the one that suit your need.

As a pole arm user my Half Orc rely quite a bit on the bleeding spear from that rescue~

That is a bit earlier in the game. Keep an eye out for potions of absorption, which IIRC grant resistance to blunt damage and electricity. They are useful for both those will-o-wisps and for those golems in the ice temple. I can't recall who sells them, but I know there are store guides on gamefaqs, or at least embedded in at least one of the larger FAQs. Of course, using a thief and a potion of master thievery to rob any store that sells magic stuff blind might not be a bad idea either. Keep a separate scroll and potion case for stolen goods, and just steal everything from the stores you can do so for.
That way when you get to a difficult area like that, you are prepared.

Now, I wouldn't advocate that for later playthroughs when you are more experienced with the game and know what is coming and can choose wisely, but for your initial playthrough robbing the stores that allow stealing of their entire inventory using PowerWord:Reload (and I suggest a potion of mastery thievery to reduce aggravation) is not a bad idea.

Everyone stands well away from each other, with a sling, bow or other *long* range weapon.

When a Will 'o Wisp appears and approaches one of your team, hit pause.

The targeted party member runs, the other [5] shoot. Unpause. The Wisp will disappear after taking a bit of damage.

When another Wisp appears, pause again. Repeat above steps.

With this barrage of damage, I doubt any 2nd Wisp could appear before the 1st disappears again. So, the threat is very manageable.

It's possible to kill all the Wisps without taking a single HP damage. I did.
